The Instrument Rating (IR) Course objective is to achieve the learning requisites of ground school and flight instruction, expertise, and experience required in order to obtain the IR(A) class rating. The student must be a holder of a PPL(A) or CPL(A) license obtained according to Part-FCL.
At the end of the course, the student must demonstrate the required level of knowledge to exercise the privileges granted to the holder of an IR(A), such as act as PIC of a single-engine or multi-engine aircraft under IFR in IMC (Instrument Meteorological Conditions) down to a Decision Height of 200ft.
All ground school must be attended on-site and students must attend a minimum of 75% class sessions of each subject in order to qualify for AESA (Agencia Estatal de Seguridad Aérea) exams.
Ground training is composed of 215 hours of ground school, and lasts approximately for 12 weeks.
The course structure is composed of the following syllabus and study break down by subject:
- Air Law
- Navigation and Radio-navigation
- Human Performance
- VFR & IFR Communications (English)
- Performance and Flight Planning
- Aircraft General Knowledge (systems & instrumentation)
- Local Flight Rules
Once the ground school is completed and the internal mandatory validation tests of each subject are successfully met, the student will be presented to the official EASA examination tests that will credit the trainee towards the theoretical knowledge required to obtain an IR rating.
The Flight phase starts on the third week of the course and last up to the 12th week, and is broken into 2 stages:
- Basic Instrument Flight: 10 hrs
- Instrument Flight: 40 hrs
The student aspiring to obtain the IR rating in a Single-engine airplane must complete the 50 hrs in one of the following single-engine aircraft types:
- Cessna C172R G1000
- Cessna C172S G1000
- Cessna C182T G1000
The student aspiring to obtain the ME-IR rating in a Multi-engine airplane must complete the 50 hrs in one of the following multi-engine aircraft types (or alternatively, if the student already has the ME rating, complete the 50hrs on a single-engine type plus 5 additional hours on a multi-engine type):
- Tecnam P2006T
- Piper Aztec PA-27
- Cessna C310
Applicants must comply with:
- The student must be in possession of a current PPL(A) or CPL(A) license.
- Pass a Class 1 medical exam (for CPL holders) or Class 2 with auditive requirements equivalent to a Class 1 (for PPL holders)
- A minimum previous experience or 50 hrs of cross-country flight as PIC
- Should the student apply for an ME/IR (multiengine/Instrument Rating) must be in possession of a current ME class rating.
- Be in possession of an ICAO 4 English level (or higher) and pass a JAR 1200 English test.
