Graduate Pathway in Special Education

The University of Alabama at Birmingham

A Pathway program provides academic, language and cultural support in order to succeed at a US university. Students are guaranteed progression to a graduate degree program through curriculum consisting of credit-earning courses. Students who successfully complete an INTO UAB Graduate Pathway program in special education are assured progression to a UAB graduate special education degree program upon submission of additional required application materials.


Degree Program Components:

2-Semester:

  • 39 credit hour program
  • 12 credit hours apply from Pathway
  • 27 credit hours remaining toward a degree

1-Semester:

  • 39 credit hour program
  • 9 credit hours apply from Pathway
  • 30 credit hours remaining toward a degree

  • Award: Students are guaranteed admission to the Master of Arts in Special Education program at UAB after successfully completing the Graduate Pathway and meeting all progression requirements.

Entry requirements

1-semester

  • Academic requirements: Four-year undergraduate degree or equivalent; 2.5 undergraduate GPA.
  • English language requirements: TOEFL iBT 80 (20 subscores in 3 sections), IELTS 6.5 (6.0 subscores in 3 sections), PTEA 53, or IELA 176.
  • Age requirements: 17 years and above.

2-semester

  • Academic requirements: Four-year undergraduate degree or equivalent; 2.5 undergraduate GPA.
  • English language requirements: TOEFL iBT 65 (16+ subscores), IELTS 5.5 (5.5+ subscores), PTEA 44, Completion of AE Level 4, Password overall Level 6, or IELA 169.
  • Age requirements: 17 years and above.
