Centennial College's Sports Journalism program is a unique graduate certificate offering that will prepare you for a career in the ever-changing world of sports media.
During your time in this Toronto sports journalism program, you'll learn the best practices for the field in a diverse and gender-inclusive environment with peers just as dedicated to and as passionate about sports.
From covering local athletes and professionals to telling the stories behind the games, players and fans, you'll develop specialized talents in:
- Sports writing (print, TV, radio, online, social media)
- Broadcast (producing, on-air performance, chase and field producing, radio hosting, updates)
- Digital (using editorial publishing tools, blogging, video, audio, Storify)
- Social media (Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest)
- News journalism that meets the changing needs of sports coverage (courts, police)
- Advanced interviewing techniques
- Sports beat journalism
- Print and online imaging
- Hosting in-studio and in the field
- Newspaper and online layout
You'll also have the opportunity to participate in the program's annual trip to baseball spring training, where you'll be able to apply skills and build confidence. Meanwhile, an industry field placement in a sports media organization in Canada or around the world will complement your training.

Program Vocational Learning Outcomes
Program Vocational Learning Outcomes describe what graduates of the program have demonstrated they can do with the knowledge and skills they have achieved during their studies. The outcomes are closely tied to the needs of the workplace. Through assessment (e.g., assignments and tests), students verify their ability to reliably perform these outcomes before graduating.
- Write accurate and analytic game stories of the events of the day, within an ethical framework, that are enjoyable to the reader or listener and that can be used on multiple platforms.
- Create and conceptualize sports features using key moments, personalities and interviews from a game or event.
- Evaluate and utilize knowledge of Canadian sports history, business, culture and society to help set stories, broadcast reports and a variety of online delivery tools within a contextual framework.
- Create a professional broadcast story, constructing it within the larger context of multiple platforms.
- Produce on-air work for broadcast by combining previously learned skills into more complex presentations using multiple media platforms.
- Analyze, discern and produce game play-by-play, using journalistic concepts, attitudes and requirements.
- Write and image for multiple platforms including print, broadcast, online news and a variety of online delivery tools.
- Integrate knowledge of imaging and electronic newsgathering into a wide range of stories, from briefs to fully realized features over all platforms.
