Why Functional Skills Mathematics
At Alpha Gateway College we believe that Functional Skills Mathematics (FSM) courses offer an opportunity to become more confident in Mathematics and to improve your job prospects and enhance your career progression.
FSM can also help prepare you for other courses, or to gain a qualification (including those in adult numeracy and literacy). These courses can help you develop the practical skills in Mathematics that you need to live, study and work. You'll learn to apply Mathematics skills in real-life situations through reading, writing, speaking and listening tasks.
What the FSM courses involve
The courses are available at different levels, so you'll be able to study at the level best suited to you. If you've applied to study a GCSE with us, depending on your assessment, we may recommend you study functional skills first.
This Functional Skills Maths qualification assesses three interrelated process skills:
- Understand practical problems in familiar and unfamiliar contexts and situations, some of which are non-routine
- Identify and obtain necessary information to tackle the problem.
- Select mathematics in an organized way to find solutions.
- Apply mathematics in an organized way to find solutions to straightforward practical problems for different purposes
- Use appropriate checking procedures at each stage
- Interpret and communicate solutions to practical problems, drawing simple conclusions and giving explanations
You will undertake written assessments and pass an online examination. You will be required to attend a City & Guilds examination center to complete the online examination; this can be arranged near to your home where possible.
Our Functional Skills Mathematics are designed to improve your speaking, listening, reading and writing and numeracy skills. Our FSM courses focus on enhancing your language and numeracy skills but also your chances at promotion at work and possibly a chance at higher education. We ensure our classes use varied activities and resources to make learning interesting and relevant.
Our courses are particularly designed for;
- Night workers
- Mothers with young children
- Unemployed seeking to improve your chances of employment
- Students wishing to improve your English
- Part-time workers
- Full-time workers
12 – 16 weeks
This course will suit you if you're a beginner, or want to work towards GCSE or other higher-level English qualification. There are no formal entry requirements, but before you enroll you'll have a short test with one of our tutors to help us decide what level is right for you.
If you've already completed a functional skills course and want to study for the next level, please bring your certificates with you when you come in for your test.
