With a maximum college enrollment of 55 students, the intimate community of undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, artists-in-residents and visiting artists creates an exciting platform for discussion, artistic collaboration and cross-disciplinary exchanges. Students are assigned their own studio space for the duration of their programme, to which they have access 24/7. Our courses are delivered both in-studio, on a tutorial basis or as group courses. Tutorial courses are taught through scheduled 1-to-1 contact in a students own studio, supplemented by regular scheduled group presentations, discussions and critiques. Group courses are taught as a unified class, with all students present with the tutor at the same time, along with individual advising sessions. Students normally take 5 courses during the semester, each carrying 3 credits. With an additional focus on broadening students’ reading and understanding of plays and theatre history, it also prepares students for broader drama degrees and related areas of study and work. The course is taught by a committed team of teachers, including many of The Lir’s core acting tutors and teachers from our Master of Fine Art programmes.The personal development of the foundation course students is enhanced by regular individual tutorials with The Foundation Course Director, a dedicated member of staff who supervises all aspects of the programme. The course also encourages students to develop their own individual creativity with a focus on collaboration, improvisation and lateral thinking.
