Top Foundation Year Programs in Performing Arts

A foundation year is a program designed for students preparing to enroll in a bachelor’s degree program. These preparatory programs are typically utilized by international students or students who need more time to meet a school’s enrollment requirements.

What is a foundation year in performing arts? Music, dance and drama are all incorporated into a performing arts education, and a foundation year can help students prepare for different concentrations in this field. Some introductory courses may include a general history of these subjects, or they may focus on specific performance styles. Music courses could provide students with basic ear training and music theory experience. Acting and dance classes may be offered in addition to private lessons.

Having an education in the performing arts can help prepare students in multiple areas of their lives and careers. A performing arts education can help students with memorization and recall. These students are often independent self-starters, but they can also collaborate well with others.

The cost of a foundation year can vary depending on the number of courses a student takes and which university is offering the program. Though every university is different, students can always research the individual institutions for specific tuition details.

The careers available in the field of performing arts are numerous and diverse for students of all concentrations and experience. Some students pursue traditional performance careers as musicians, actors or dancers. Creative opportunities are also available for students who pursue directing, producing, playwriting or composing. Various technical positions like stage management and sound design may also be considered by students with a performance background. Students may also find careers in education by teaching in traditional classroom settings or by becoming private instructors.

There are plenty of international universities that offer a foundation year in performing arts. Search for your program below and contact directly the admission office of the school of your choice by filling in the lead form.

An Introduction to our Music Foundation

In today’s world, it is not only important to be able to play your instrument well, but it is vital to understand the history of the craft and where everything originated from. Computers are at the heart of everything we do; the ability to be able to use the software, make your own recording, mix it, improve the sound and set up a microphone are all important skills if you are to become an accomplished musician.

If you are looking for a place at a university music department you will be well prepared for higher education, having undertaken aural training, music research and performance. At a music university department, your study will be more academically based; you will study a broader range of content of which performance is one element. If you are looking for a place at a Conservatoire, you will be given the opportunity to undertake extensive preparation for entrance examinations and auditions. At a Conservatoire, there will be more of a focus on performance. You will be encouraged to build links within the music industry through course projects and key units throughout the year.... [-]

Contemporary Dance

One of the reasons contemporary dance is so popular is because of its diversity and flexibility. Building on 20th Century and modern dance styles, it is constantly changing and developing as new trends emerge.

A very personalised style and approach to dance, contemporary dance explores the connection between mind and body, using natural energy along with strong knowledge of technique, vocabulary, and repertoire. Contemporary dancers can come from any training background, making it very accessible to classical ballet dancers and break dancers alike. Dance styles and well-known movement techniques are mixed with body training, such as yoga, pilates, and conditioning.... [-]

This actor-driven ethos infuses every element of the performance-related aspects of the course; the teaching team work closely together to ensure that authenticity in character development and storytelling are at the heart of the work. At the same time, you are provided with regular technique classes to expand your repertoire of performance skills, to refine and advance the skills you already have, and to encourage proficiency in the theoretical elements that underpin the art form.... Classical & Contemporary Acting

Actor training has two distinct facets. The first to do with the holistic development of the human being that allows them to expand their imagination and empathetic capacities, to deepen their sensitivity to the broad spectrum of human experience and emotion, and to push the boundaries of their willingness and ability to connect with and express powerful and often painful feelings with freedom and authenticity. The second concerns the training of the actor’s ‘instruments’ – his/her body and their voice – and the mastery of the technical elements of performance that enables an actor to communicate effectively with an audience. These two facets of work often feel at odds with one another – pure feeling versus pure technique – but when an actor can build within him or herself a strong bridge between them, that is when the magic happens. And that is when the actor, as a skilled creative artist, is at his/her most powerful.... [-]

What is the International Music Foundation Programme at DLD? Prepares you for undergraduate study at a Music conservatoire such as the Royal Academy of Music, etc. Gives a firm grounding in the study skills required to study in the UK. Unlike other foundation courses, this course will leave you with internationally recognised qualifications. Mode: Full-time; Duration: 1 year What will I study?

It includes five components:

Grade 8 ABRSM or Diploma: You will receive two weekly one-to-one lessons in your first study instrument/voice (2 hours) to prepare for the examination during the year. The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) qualifications are equivalent to an A level and are awarded the same UCAS points. ABRSM exam in second study: You will receive weekly one-to-one lessons in a second study instrument (60 minutes). Students are strongly encouraged to study piano if it is not their principle study. Grade 6-8 Theory: Music conservatoires accept Grade 8 theory (ABRSM) as an alternative to a full A level in Music. This will be taught either individually or in small groups. Students will also follow a course of Alexander technique leading to a certificate. This course improves body posture and breathing and is used widely in music and drama colleges to improve performance skills. Students with an IELTS score below 6.5 (or equivalent) will follow a course in Academic English in preparation for the IELTS examination to satisfy the language requirements of higher education. The minimum requirement for Music is usually 5.5.... [-]
