The teaching team will draw on the results of these initial activities to ensure all learning styles are captured. The activities involved in completing the Personal and Professional Development are designed to encourage students to take an active role in both their learning and their professional development, and the exercises and reflections contained within will enable learners to understand and link their own self-development to the module specific outcomes and content. The portfolio will be completed in various stages throughout both levels of the course. Students will participate in one to one and group tutorials, and wider learning will be supported by guest speakers from industry related organisations. A student can normally expect to receive a variety of learning mechanisms including taught sessions, academic tutorials, pastoral tutorials, academic workshops, guided study, learning content via the virtual learning environment NCD Online, educational visits (including international), guest speakers, the College’s Business Society activities, work placement and support in the work place. All students will complete generic modules at Level 4 and then follow the Event Management pathway at Level 5. Contact time / Independent Learning: Learning time includes both contact time and private, independent study. The typical student is expected to undertake 200 hours of learning time to achieve the learning required for 20 credits. Other contact time is for both academic and pastoral support. Assessment Formative assessment is integral to the learning experience of the students on this programme (as indicated in the individual module specifications), for example, at Level 4 in the ‘Understanding People in Organisations’ module, formative assessment will include role-play, discussion and a written report which gives students a taste of the expectations and requirements for overall module success. Also at Level 4 in the ‘Financial Management’ module, formative assessment will include mock examinations in preparation for the summative examination, as well as developing examination techniques. At Level 5, a range of summative assessment methods including research projects, group tasks, presentations and written reports are used to provide a varied and robust process. The variation of summative assessment methods at both Levels 4 and 5 were chosen by the course team to reflect the range of practical skills which students will need to demonstrate within the workplace. Assessment of the modules will also be used as vehicles to assess the various key/transferable skills. The inclusion of practical based assessment throughout the programme is in place to reflect the practical nature of many of the jobs to which graduates may progress. The assessments used will be internally moderated by the course team and then verified by the External Examiner before being issued to students in order to ensure clarity, and coverage of all module learning outcomes. Students are provided with an assessment schedule to allow them to plan their study around work and home commitments. A sample of work is second marked internally and then submitted to the External Examiner to verify and check for fairness and consistency. The course team recognises that assessment is an integral component of student development and so students will be provided with individual written and oral feedback which includes areas for development. Student self-reflection within their Personal and Professional Development (PPD) portfolio encourages them to consider the feedback and what they can do to improve their own performance. Entry Criteria To gain entry to the programme, a student must satisfy the standard or non-standard entry requirements to the course. Candidates with non-standard entry requirements will be considered on the basis of relevant work experience and attainment of skills, which demonstrate an ability to study at this level. Given the wide experience of potential applicants to this course, applications for Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) and Accreditation of Experiential Learning (APEL) are welcomed in accordance with the College FDAP Academic Regulations. However, these must be discussed as part of the admissions process, as once a student is registered to a progamme APL/APEL may not be considered for approval.
