First-Year Art

First-Year Art is a general, multidisciplinary program for students entering in most BFA programs (except Drawing and Painting). First-year incorporates studio experience with critical thinking in order to create a solid foundation for those progressing through to upper year levels. There is great depth in our majors, but we value the breadth of study as well, supported by courses from Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Explore these interdisciplinary programs which incorporate First-Year Art:

  • Creative Writing
  • Criticism & Curatorial Practice
  • Cross-Disciplinary Art: Life Studies
  • Cross-Disciplinary Art: Publications
  • Digital Futures
  • Digital Painting and Expanded Animation
  • Indigenous Visual Culture
  • Integrated Media
  • Material Art & Design
  • Photography
  • Printmaking
  • Sculpture/Installation

Drawing & Painting (Direct Entry)
Learn how to become a dynamic artist through studying theory, art history and social issues. Take courses in landscape, figurative and abstract painting. Learn to speak, write and present your artwork for an exhibition. Be encouraged to experiment with digital, installation, and experimental approaches.

Strengthen skills in colour, value, and texture. Depict the figure through anatomy lessons and observational skills. Learn the power of composition and surface in abstraction. Get outside and paint the landscape; learn to see in new ways. Do a field study in an artist’s studio or gallery for job experience. Enrol in the Florence program for a semester in Italy.

Specialization in Digital Painting & Expanded Animation

Digital Painting and Expanded Animation is a specialization of both the Integrated Media and Drawing & Painting Programs. Experiment with digital art and animation. Strengthen your technical abilities in digital imaging, stop-motion, video compositing, media installation, 3D modelling and animation. With this specialization, you’ll develop your practice as an independent artist and animator, and learn skills you can use in a variety of creative industries.
