Usually, students beginning their programmes are at least 18 years of age. How long will my study take? Undergraduate degrees are three years, diplomas are usually two years and certificates are one year. Graduate and postgraduate qualifications can take one to two years to complete. What about international recognition? All of our qualifications are recognised internationally. You are able to take your Otago Polytechnic undergraduate degree and apply to other national and international tertiary institutions for graduate and postgraduate study. How much can I earn as a student? Those students who are eligible to work while studying may get causal jobs in areas like hospitality or other service industries. Your hourly wage is likely to be between NZD$13-15. What do I need for my student visa? Your Otago Polytechnic Offer of Place letter. This letter means you have been accepted to study. It also states your course fee, which you must pay first to your nearest New Zealand embassy, consulate or immigration office. You will then receive a receipt of payment from us. You must submit these two documents (your Offer of Place and your receipt of fees), along with evidence that you have sufficient funds for living expenses, and a return international air ticket or evidence of sufficient funds to buy one, to your nearest New Zealand embassy, consulate or immigration office. The Ecotourism and Outdoor Leadership (ETOL) program can help you apply your interests in a number of exciting, rewarding career options. Our Ecotourism and Outdoor Leadership (ETOL) program is based on the principles of experiential education, where students learn by doing. We provide a broad range of courses for a comprehensive education while applying the theory learned in class through field experiences. Our curriculum weaves natural resource themes throughout to create an understanding of current theory and practice of ecotourism and outdoor leadership. We expose you to a variety of aspects of the industry including geography, natural resources education, environmental interpretation, ecotourism issues and technical outdoor skills. Many of the courses provide opportunities to practice outdoor skills and apply theory in both practical and professional settings — sometimes completing projects for real clients in the industry. You will find many of the lab sessions and field trips are held outdoors in nearby natural areas such as Cypress Hills Inter-Provincial Park, various locations in the Rockies, as well as destinations further abroad. Because of the highly experiential nature of this program, you will be expected to participate on average, approximately three field trips per semester. The length and location of the trips will vary each year. With the ETOL program, you have the option of pursuing a two-year diploma or a three-year applied degree ending in a field placement. Our faculty are leaders in their field and are a part of ongoing professional development and research. They believe in working closely with students, providing the personalized and professional guidance not every post-secondary institution can offer. Continuation Requirements Academic standards and continuation requirements are consistent with general College policies. In addition, you must demonstrate a professional approach, an adequate level of fitness, and satisfactory work habits. You may be asked to withdraw should you fail to meet these program standards.
