We’ll have a historical costumer come into class with samples of garments from different fashion eras, and you’ll learn how to make a garment and design a collection based on whatever historical period fascinates you the most. By building a catalogue of these major trends and influences, you’ll be able to reference them throughout your career—it’s a valuable resource that will be essential in helping you predict future fashion trends. FASHION ILLUSTRATION Time to put pencil to paper. In this course, you’ll learn the essentials of drawing fashion illustration. You’ll render an 8-10 heads high fashion figure and explore different creative mediums, such as pencil, charcoal and watercolor paint. You’ll also look at how to sketch different fabrics, textures, folds and pleats. If you can’t draw, don’t panic—you’ll be able to confidently sketch a fashion figure by the end of this course. Fashion illustration is a language that is spoken throughout the industry, regardless of where in the world you are, making it a valuable skill to carry with you upon graduation. PORTFOLIO DEVELOPMENT & CAREER PLANNING Here, we look beyond the classroom to prepare you for your career in the fashion industry. Initially, we’ll focus on portfolio creation, then you’ll work with your instructor to find your niche and tailor your resume to suit your individual goals. You’ll also learn the invaluable practices of writing cover letters, crafting thank you letters and nailing an interview. We’ll record and review your interview, so you can get feedback before you try your hand at the real thing. It’s an opportunity for you to develop your own style of portfolio presentation, so you can really sell yourself to future employers. PR & COMMUNICATIONS Communication is key, especially in the fashion business world. The goal of this course is for you to learn how to communicate a brand’s message to the public. You’ll create both paper and paperless media kits, and develop social media campaigns and strategies. ENTREPRENEURIAL SKILLS In this course, you’re the boss. You’ll learn how to execute a business plan when starting and operating your own business. You’ll also get to know more about the people behind the scenes, such as lawyers, accountants, landlords and contractors—these are the people you’ll need to collaborate with. FASHION SHOW PRODUCTION Ready for the runway? Working with your instructor, you and your classmates will create and produce a live fashion show in support of a local charity—from start to finish. You’ll get to design or style your own section of the show, and each classmate will have designated roles and responsibilities. As a prerequisite for this course, you’ll be required to participate as fashion show crew for the preceding class. PRACTICUM Nothing can prepare you for the real world like the experience you’ll get from an industry practicum. The JCI Fashion Director and Industry Liaison, Maneli, will help place you in a role that matches your individual skills, interests and career goals. You’ll have to complete a minimum of 48 hours over a 12-week period in your placement during Term 3. Once your practicum comes to an end, you’ll be evaluated on your performance, and possibly even offered a full-time position. The programme is structured to produce outcomes demonstrated by the student's ability to: Develop and apply a production strategy that reflects market research, design development, branding, marketing, merchandising and distribution of a product range that meets the needs of an identified fashion target market. Apply advanced textile application, manual skills and computer technology (CAD/CAM) to the manufacturing processes of a diverse range of fashion products. Develop technical packages that analyse, solve and communicate problems related to technical product development and quality improvement of fashion products. Apply business, personnel and operations management principles to enhance quality, productivity and profitability related to fashion manufacturing. PROJECT 1:Ladies Day Wear • Ladies Evening Wear • Ladies Active Wear • Mens Casual Wear • Mens Active Wear Identify 3 garments (1 from any category given above) from any contemporary fashion designer/brand that you can find in a magazine. Re-draw the garments as detailed technical line drawings on A4 paper. Carefully consider all seam lines that should be present in the technical drawing. You should add labels to the technical drawing where necessary. Draw each garment on a separate sheet of paper and attach the photographic reference (picture) of each of the garments to the back of the technical drawing. Attach fabric samples that you think would suit the technical drawings. PROJECT 2: Trend report Compile a trend report. Choose a target market and write about a trend that is currently influencing this target market. Explain your choices. Your trend report can include images that you have found in magazines or on the internet. This trend report should be 2 A4 pages. PROJECT 3: Design and make a fabric shoulder bag inspired by your trend report using the following dimensions: BAG: Width: 25cm / Length: 30cm BAG SLING/HANDLE: Any length or width of your own choice, as long as it suits that bag that you are designing. DECORATION: Decorate the bag according to a stated theme of your choice. MATERIALS TO BE USED FOR THE BAG: You may make use of any of the materials that you feel are suitable. Please note that the bag needs to be sturdy and usable. MOTIVATION: Write a short motivation (120 to 150 words) explaining the theme you chose, the fabric you used and how you decorated the bag. PROJECT 4: In a well-developed 500 word essay, describe your understanding of the fashion industry and explain why you have chosen fashion as a career. Pay attention to the presentation of your portfolio as this is a part of the portfolio assessment criteria. You need to add a signed declaration (a signed affidavit from the police station or a commissioner of oath) that the above is your own work. Make sure that every project has your ID/passport number clearly visible. Prospective candidates may be asked for an interview as part of the entrance assessment. Submission Date You may submit your portfolio as soon as you are ready to do so, between the hours of 08:00 and 12:00. However, the final submission date is 31 October 2016 by 12:00. This is an in depth one year programme of study that focuses on Fashion Promotion and Styling, leading to a nationally recognised qualification. Throughout the course you will cover Fashion Promotion, Visual Merchandising, Fashion Imagery, Marketing, Advertising, History of Fashion, Fashion Illustration, Styling, Photoshop, Portfolio building, Final Major Project and Careers Advice and Guidance. You will also be expected to complete a work experience placement as part of your course. What does the course lead to? Where will I study? Situated at our Hortensia Road site in Chelsea, we are ideally situated within walking distance of some of the best museums and galleries in London. What are the facilities and equipment like? Design studios with access to sewing machines, a range of specialist fashion equipment and ICT suite for Photoshop classes. How much will I need to study outside class? You will need to work as much as you can outside of class time to develop your coursework and portfolio. We expect students to be punctual and have full attendance. How is the course assessed? Your work will be assessed at the end of each project; you will get regular feedback on your progress in class, as well as in individual and in-group tutorials throughout the three terms.
