Harvest Education Technical College (HETC)

The Diploma of Interpreting is the first step on the way to professional practice. Through the diploma, you will gain basic oral transfer skills in general settings, and professional and contextual aspects in various interpreting settings, including elective units in legal and medical knowledge and terminology. Most teaching/learning activities and assessment tasks are practical. The focus is on developing the necessary basic interpreting skills to work as an interpreter in general settings. This is a NAATI approved course.

Program Structure

Students will be introduced to the profession of interpreting and led to explore various contextual areas that interpreters work in. You will be trained to analyse, recall and reproduce source language message in the target language in general settings, applying effective linguistic transfer skills and discourse management strategies. Through classes, workshops and various guided group and individual learning activities, you will practise your interpreting skills, whilst also gaining an appreciation of professional ethics and industry knowledge that is essential to your future career.

Specific Training Package requirements including entry requirements

International students:

  1. Mandarin & English – NAATI Approved
    • Minimum age: 18 years old or above
    • Achieving a minimum level of academic qualification equivalent to an Australian Year 11 high school certificate; OR
    • Passing HETC’s internal academic entry test
    • Achieving an IELTS (or accepted equivalent) score of 6.0 with no component lower than 5.5 and Listening and Speaking components no lower than 6.0 within the past two years; OR
    • Passing HETC’s English entry test
  2. Korean & English – NAATI Approved
    • Minimum age: 18 years old or above
    • Achieving a minimum level of academic qualification equivalent to an Australian Year 11 high school certificate; OR
    • Passing HETC’s internal academic entry test
    • Achieving as IELTS (or accepted equivalent) score of 7.0 with Listening and Speaking components no lower than 6.5, Reading and Writing components no lower than 6.0 within the past two year; OR
    • Passing HETC’s English entry test

Domestic students (Korean & English; Mandarin & English – NAATI Approved – Self Funded):

  • Basic computer skills, including searching internet, using digital devices and Microsoft applications, managing files, installing programs, updating software and protecting your computer
  • Advanced Language Other Than English (LOTE) skills (Korean or Mandarin)
  • Achieving a minimum level of academic qualification equivalent to an Australian Year 12 high school certificate; OR
  • Passing HETC’s internal academic entry test

Domestic Students (VET FEE-HELP)

  • 18 years old or above AND
  • Attaining a Senior Secondary Certificate of Education that has been awarded by an agency or authority of a State or Territory for the completion of Year 12; OR
  • Displaying competence at or above Exit Level 3 in the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) in both Reading and Numeracy (via an approved testing tool from the government, on application). AND
  • Advanced Language Other Than English (LOTE) skills (Korean or Mandarin) AND
  • Basic computer skills, including searching internet, using digital devices and Microsoft applications, managing files, installing programs, updating software and protecting your computer
