The business of music takes on many forms. Fanshawe's Music Industry Arts program focuses your musical talents and creative passions on applied skills that will help you make your mark in the world of audio and recording arts.

Awarded Canada's top music school for three years running, Music Industry Arts has graduated some of the world's best producers and performers for over 40 years. This outstanding network of alumni includes Oscar, JUNO and Primetime Emmy winners.

You'll begin with the basics in sound and business and move through writing, producing and engineering courses. Along the way, learn to manage artists, labels, digital media, and communications technology and master audio and live sound production. Key highlights include planning and performing in the annual Share the Land charity concert and connecting with industry leaders at Canadian Music Week. Guest lectures, master classes and workshops with artists-in-residence will equip you with extensive knowledge of the latest technology and business expertise.

You'll find rewarding work with recording artists, songwriters, agents and promoters, or in film and TV, video games, studio recording, live concerts, music publishing, and management.

Other Information

  • Due to the academic rigor required in the Music Industry Arts program, applicants applying directly to this program from secondary school without additional post-secondary education, are encouraged to consider applying to the Pre-Media program. The Pre-Media program is an excellent preparatory program.

Learning Outcomes

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  1. Display a positive and professional attitude towards the responsibility and respect for the creation of music and sound.
  2. Meet strict deadlines and enhance creativity through the act of balancing technology and arts.
  3. Apply market-ready skills in music and sound recording, preproduction, audio production, writing, arranging, editing, mixing, contracting, and delivering, artist discovery, development, direction, marketing, promotion, tour management and live sound production.
  4. Utilize strong time management, problem-solving and organizational skills.
  5. Stay current with industry practices primarily in the technical and secondarily in non-technical audio industry sectors through the use of creating sound and music.
  6. Operate audio and video hardware and software through the creation and design of sound and music either with or without moving or still pictures.
  7. Apply industry-level skills in the operation of live sound and music recording.
  8. Create all documentation necessary in order to develop a music artist.

Students must complete a minimum of 18 credits in this program at Fanshawe College to meet the program residency requirement and graduate from this program.

Admission Requirements

This is a competitive program; the number of qualified applicants exceeds the number of seats available.

  • OSSD with courses from the College (C), University (U), University/College (M), or Open (O) stream with:
    • Any Grade 12 English (C) or (U)

or

  • Academic and Career Entrance Certificate (ACE)

or

  • Pre-Media Ontario College Certificate* (Note: minimum final average required is 2.0 GPA) and:
    • standing in the required course stated above

or

  • General Arts and Science Ontario College Certificate** (Note: minimum final average required is 2.0 GPA) and:
    • standing in the required course stated above

or

  • Ontario High School Equivalency Certificate (GED)

or

  • Mature Applicant with standing in the required course stated above

and

  • Completion of a Supplemental

English Language Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate proficiency in English by one of the following methods:

  • A Grade 12 College Stream or University Stream English credit from an Ontario Secondary School, or equivalent, depending on the program's Admission Requirements
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test with a minimum score of 79 for the Internet-based test (iBT), with test results within the last two years
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic test with an overall score of 6.0 with no score less than 5.5 in any of the four bands, with test results within the last two years
  • Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) test with an overall score of 60 with no score less than 50 in any of the four bands, with test results within the last two year
  • Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE) with a minimum score of 53, with test results within the last two years
  • A Cambridge English Test (FCE/CAE/CPE) with an overall score on the Cambridge English Scale of 169 with no language skill less than 162, with test results within the last two years
  • An English Language Evaluation (ELE) at Fanshawe College with a minimum score of 70% in all sections of the test, with test results within the last two years
  • Fanshawe College ESL4/GAP5 students: Minimum grade of 80% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 8, 75% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 9, or 70% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 10

Recommended Personal Preparation

  • It is an advantage to the student to have a background in music theory and performance, knowledge and appreciation of all types of music, an interest in the recording industry and its role in today's entertainment field, experience with computer and/or synthesizer/MIDI applications

Applicant Selection Criteria

Where the number of eligible applicants exceeds the available spaces in the program, the Applicant Selection Criteria will be:

  1. Preference for Permanent Residents of Ontario.
  2. Receipt of Application by February 1st (After this date, Fanshawe College will consider applicants on a first-come, first-served basis until the program is full).
  3. Achievement in the Admission Requirements.

Note:
*Students who are currently registered in the Pre-Media program at Fanshawe College or at any Ontario College of Applied Arts and Technology must successfully complete their Pre-Media College Certificate with a minimum 2.0 GPA by April 30, 2020, and meet the academic prerequisite course for the Music Industry Arts program in order to be eligible for admission consideration in the immediately following academic year to the Music Industry Arts program.
**Students who are currently registered in the General Arts and Science program at Fanshawe College or at any Ontario College of Applied Arts and Technology must successfully complete their General Arts and Science Ontario College Certificate with a minimum 2.0 GPA by April 30, 2020, and meet the academic prerequisite course for the Music Industry Arts program in order to be eligible for admission consideration in the immediately following academic year to the Music Industry Arts program.

Career Opportunities

This program offers a unique opportunity for learning the skills required for the music production/recording industry, the post-production field, and the music business industries. The graduate may find career opportunities with music/audio recording and live remote recording, music/audio production, and live sound. Also, audio and sound design for film, live sound, web, games, television, radio, cruise ships, as well as artist development and promotion, music business including sound supervision, copyright, entertainment law, publishing and merchandising.
