In just two months, you will gain practical skills to collect, process, analyze, and interpret data so that you can develop actionable insights. Expand your skills by understanding how to leverage statistics, data mining and big data to develop strategies in marketing, retail, health care, finance, and other fields. Pay special attention to effectively use programming and data visualization when working on a project.

Pramod Gupta, Ph.D., is a data enthusiast with 20-plus years of experience in data mining, data science, predictive analytics and applied machine learning algorithms. He is passionate about using analytics and data mining to turn data into meaningful insights and to build products. He has extensive experience working on statistical and predictive modeling, building algorithms and finding answers to unknown questions using Machine Learning algorithms.

Intensive Curriculum

Schedule

Progress through each topic, week by week, learning alongside your fellow classmates.

Weeks 1–2: Programming Python Weeks 3–4: Introduction to Data Analytics
Study practical applications in Python including general programming for the web, systems administration, text handling, and object-oriented programming. You also get the opportunity to study examples of useful working programs.

Get an overview of advanced Excel, SQL, and R to perform analysis on huge sets of data. Learn the theory behind formulating statistical models by using regression analysis. You also study segmentation theory and methods such as k-means clustering that are used for data mining and analysis.
Weeks 5–6: Introduction to Databases Weeks 7–8: Data Analytics and Visualization
Study the fundamentals and components of databases, including data structures and relationships. You then apply that knowledge to access databases using Microsoft Access form-based queries, followed by Structured Query Language (SQL) queries using DBMS products such as MySQL and Oracle. You then pay particular attention to database design follows, including the database life cycle, the normalization process, and a survey of common data structure patterns. Learn techniques to effectively produce actionable reports and visualizations from data and data sets. You research data sets from a variety of business disciplines using Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Power BI, and Google Analytics. Through hands-on exercises, you leverage statistical, data-querying, and dashboard tools to create products that accurately convey crucial business trends and themes.

Upon completion, you will receive a certificate from an accredited institution.

Admission requirements

  • Grade Point Average (GPA): 3.0
  • Completion of three years of undergraduate study
  • Knowledge of statistics (fulfill this prerequisite by taking Introduction to Statistics online)

English-Language Proficiency Requirement

Whether you are a student, working professional or lifelong learner, you will need to demonstrate English proficiency to be considered for admission into any of our programs for international students.

Note: Your transcripts and credentials should reflect the coursework that you completed in English. Our Admissions Department will assess all documentation and inform you if additional items are needed. Please note that our admissions process is holistic and meeting the English-language proficiency requirement does not guarantee acceptance. You can meet our English-language requirement in any of the following ways:

You will satisfy the interview requirement if you have earned any one of the following minimum scores:

  • TOEFL: 79–89
  • IELTS: 6.5
  • TOEIC: 700–900
  • Cambridge English Preliminary (PET) Passing Grade
  • ELS Level 112 with an ELS GPA of 3.0

or

  • You have passed an interview with a UC Berkeley Extension recruiter. Interviews are held in your home country.

You may request a waiver if you meet one of the following requirements:

  • You have completed one year of full-time college-level instruction entirely in the English language.
  • You have successfully completed a university-level program in a country where English is the official language.
  • You are from a country on the exempt list. Contact an adviser for more information.
