A common example is an environmental damage caused due to limited consideration of environmental resources within our cities. Urban water bodies are one such resource, which functions as a network of a natural system. Several benefits are associated with this natural water system - maintenance of drainage pattern of the city, reduced instances of urban floods and recharge of groundwater, all of which would lead to overall enhancement of quality of life. This Winter School is focused on learning from some of the transformative and successful urban projects and inquiring in depth about these from the project proponents themselves. The selected projects are in Srilanka – Colombo, Galle, Hambantota and Northern Provinces and include waterfronts, heritage conservation, and resettlement & low-cost housing. The Authorities / Project proponents – Urban Development Authorities of Colombo and Hambantota; Indian Consulate Hambantota; Geoffrey Bawa Heritage Foundation and Galle Heritage Foundation would make extensive presentations on the projects to the participants, followed by interactive discussions and site visits.

For each project, the key questions asked are the 1) socio-political context/objectives; 2) structuring and financing; 3) principal agencies and actors; 4) problems/challenges addressed; 6) features and 7) outcomes and lessons learned. Participants at the end are expected to document these cases and key learnings/lessons that may be useful to structure projects in our cities which face similar challenges of rapid growth and renewal. Aurangabad located in Maharashtra, India has many historical monuments, including the Ajanta Caves and Ellora Caves, which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, as well as Bibi Ka Maqbara and Panchakki. Besides these, the city of Aurangabad has a number of ancient Nehers(Canals) of pure mineral subterranean drinking water which were made by its founder Malik Amber, as early as 1617 A.D. Aurangabad town always faced scarcity of water and there were no big dams or water reservoirs in the vicinity. Owing to hard rock & dry land, it was very difficult to construct the pillars to supply water to the town. Malik Amber in 1617 A.D. discovered subterranean water table of mountainous elevated valleys in the north of Aurangabad. He practically manipulated and procured a stable perennial water supply for a population of 7 lakh by constructing his unique Wonderful aqueduct by name Khair - e - Jari. The old water supply system is reminiscent of a medieval period and this was a great feat of ancient engineering achievement. The winter school would graphically summarize and document through a coffee table book the rich water management heritage of Aurangabad and lessons that might apply to present challenges in planning and managing water for human habitats.... This intensive workshop allows Master of Architecture and Urban Design students to explore and engage with the contemporary global challenges of rapid urbanization, affordable mass housing and urban resilience in a context in which these challenges are most amplified. The workshop is a collaboration between the Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology, CEPT and UNSW Built Environment. Students will be required to do an analysis of the existing fabric, traditional urban morphologies and building technologies, (construction and environmental systems) that have sustained the world heritage city of Ahmedabad over many centuries. The challenge is to regenerate and adapt this fabric for a 21st-century living while maintaining the critical conservation values of the precinct. Students will be expected to propose innovative uses, adaption and architectural interventions that while specific to a place and building, can also be strategically applied as a model for other adaptive reuse projects within the city, providing a compendium of adaptation strategies and lessons for wider application....
