“Outstanding lawyers and a sound legal system are prerequisites of any civilized society. The legal system provides the rules within which the state’s administration, the business world, individuals and organizations, indeed the whole community operate. In any country in which the law reigns supreme, lawyers must apply legal rules and act as watch dogs to ensure that everyone adheres to the norms of society. Because the law plays an immense and far-reaching role, legal studies cover a wide and exiting field: the rules of the tough business world and the business entities operating within it, the protection of human rights, intimate family relationships, the prosecution of criminals and the conclusions of contracts, to name but a few.” These are the words of the dean of the Faculty of Law, Prof Patrick O’Brien. Course Studies 2017 in Johannesburg South Africa. About us African Leadership Academy Model African Union (ALAMAU) is a simulation of the African Union, providing a platform for young leaders aged 14 to 19 to explore the inner workings of the African Union, and to practice international diplomacy by assuming the roles of African leaders. This conference affords delegates the opportunity to study complex African issues, understand the interests and positions of African countries, and learn to successfully negotiate without compromising national interests. ALAMAU aims to empower young leaders to model international cooperation while celebrating diversity and promoting pan-African unity. ALAMAU 2015 will be held from March 18-22, 2015 as young leaders attempt to resolve, in five days of intense brainstorming and negotiations, some of the longest-running and most complicated issues on the continent. The conference experience will, however, not be limited to committee sessions; through keynote presentations by African Union officials and foreign policy experts, a diplomatic roundtable featuring ambassadors from several countries, educational tours to historic sites and a celebration of cultural diversity through the Cultural Night, delegates will experience a highly intellectual, educative and exciting conference. There will also be a parallel conference for international educators accompanying students to the conference, as they will be exposed to presentations by several thought-leaders in Africa, and engaged in peer learning geared towards developing the next generation of diplomatic African leaders. Building on a successful inaugural conference in April 2014 on the theme ‘Shared Challenges, Common Solutions’, delegates to ALAMAU 2015 will focus on ‘Moving from Potential to Action’. Africa has long been identified as a gold mine of opportunities, yet conversations often dwell too strongly on the continent’s potential without implementable action plans or definite steps taken to ensure the continent’s development. With the continent’s youthful population, abundant natural and human resources, and the rapid growth of our local economies, Africa is indeed ready to take off. This conference provides a unique opportunity for young leaders to develop strategies to enable us utilize our vast resources to achieve holistic human-centred Pan-African growth. ACTIVITIES AT ALAMAU 2015 Committee Sessions At ALAMAU 2015, seven organs and subsidiary bodies of the African Union will be simulated. Each committee session will last for three hours and will mainly include speeches and caucus negotiations, ultimately culminating in a resolution drafted to solve the issue for which the committee was convened. Prior to the conference, delegates would have studied widely on their assigned countries and topics, ensuring that they make well-informed recommendations that will promote development across the continent. Diplomatic Reception & Roundtable Delegates to ALAMAU 2015 will be drawn from several countries within and outside Africa; therefore as part of their diplomatic experience at ALAMAU, they will be afforded the opportunity to interact with and learn from several African ambassadors in a cocktail reception. The ambassadors will subsequently engage in a roundtable discussion to e realities of international diplomacy. Faculty Advisor Speaker Series Each delegation to ALAMAU 2015 will be accompanied by a faculty member, who might be a teacher in the humanities or one who maintains significant interest in international affairs. Educational Tours South Africa is home to several historic and educational sites including the Apartheid Museum and Cradle of Humankind. As part of the conference experience, delegates and advisors will have the opportunity to visit some of these historic sites, affording them a good break from intense committee sessions, while providing an opportunity to strengthening friendships. Cultural Night Considering the diversity of nationalities and cultures that will be represented at ALAMAU, delegated will be engaged in a celebration of all represented cultures at our Africa-themed Cultural Night. Participants will witness a fusion of music, food, fashion, dance, drama and poetry that highlight the uniqueness of different cultures from all regions of Africa. [-]
