Welcome to Valencia, a dream-like city which is actually real! Within the precincts of one single city, you will be able to experience both history and modernity while savoring the delights of a true Mediterranean life.

Today, Valencia is Spain’s third largest city, but over 2,000 years ago, it already shined under the reign of Caesar Augustus. In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, Valencia wielded economic power throughout the Mediterranean. In the new millennium, this welcoming city continues making history with its avant-garde architecture, as well as with its people and economic fabric.

The City of Arts & Sciences is an architectural collection of exceptional beauty, harmonizing the outer structure with the content. Its stunning architecture naturally blends with its great capacity to entertain, teach, and excite by promoting public participation. Offering cultural and intellectual leisure, the City of Arts & Sciences has given Valencia the best center of this type in Europe.... [-]

Why Rome?

From ancient Roman mythology to a modern-day papal audience, there is no denying religion’s integral role in Rome’s culture throughout history.

What You'll Study

Our Sociology & Religion Program takes you through millennia of Rome’s religious and cultural development. Courses consider the emergence of Christianity in the Roman Empire, the history of Judaism in Rome, social issues in modern Italy, and more. Opportunities to enroll in a Religious Studies or Social Science course at Università degli Studi Roma Tre add to your curriculum, and an Italian language course rounds out your Sociology or Religion focus.

Rome and its surrounding region are also your classroom. All courses are trip intensive and include faculty-led visits to some of Rome’s most significant sites for religion and sociology. This course will be shaped around a conversation about social entrepreneurship and the role social entrepreneurs play in creating positive social change in our rapidly evolving global community.

Governments and often large well-established NGOs are slow to adapt and are struggling to provide the necessary services that millions of marginalized and disadvantaged people desperately need.

And this is where social entrepreneurs can pick up the slack. Throughout this course students will be identifying social issues that they feel passionate about and learn how these issues might be rectified using social entrepreneurship. All students will create a business plan for a fictitious social venture that in some way addresses a social issue.... [-]

Sociology is the study of people in society. It examines people as social beings on the individual, group and societal level. It can be defined as: ‘the scientific study of human social life, groups and societies.’ Sociology is thus a social science (like psychology or anthropology), rather than a physical one (such as physics, chemistry or biology). It is the task of the sociologist to unravel how ‘nurture’ or ‘social’ factors (rather than ‘nature’ (or genetic, biological or inherited factors, as in the study of biology) influence people at the level of the individual, group or wider society.

Sociologists consider how social and socially-influenced factors, such as family, education, ethnicity, social class and gender can play a part in shaping individual identities. Sociologists also consider group behaviour. For example, a sociologist may study how an office teamwork, or how people’s behaviour is affected by those of their colleagues or work associates. They may also question how factors such as gender or class influence our behaviours as individuals and in group contexts.... [-]
