Why Rome?

From ancient Roman mythology to a modern-day papal audience, there is no denying religion’s integral role in Rome’s culture throughout history.

What You'll Study

Our Sociology & Religion Program takes you through millennia of Rome’s religious and cultural development. Courses consider the emergence of Christianity in the Roman Empire, the history of Judaism in Rome, social issues in modern Italy, and more. Opportunities to enroll in a Religious Studies or Social Science course at Università degli Studi Roma Tre add to your curriculum, and an Italian language course rounds out your Sociology or Religion focus.

Rome and its surrounding region are also your classroom. All courses are trip intensive and include faculty-led visits to some of Rome’s most significant sites for religion and sociology. Why Rome?

Although the Roman Empire fell some 1,500 years ago, its legacy has loomed large throughout modern history. The Senate and legislative assemblies of the ancient Roman Republic are similar to how legislature currently works in many countries, including the United States. Today, Rome plays a large role in European and global politics, economics, and business. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a better place to study international relations between the EU and United States than Rome, a city that laid the groundwork for much of Western civilization.

Our International Relations Program explores the role and history of Italian involvement in European, Mediterranean, and world affairs from the 1800s to the present. You’ll examine the long-lasting interaction and implications of Italy’s position in the EU, the intricacies and complexities of Italian politics since the end of WWII, fundamental contemporary issues such as terrorism and mass migration, and more.... Context

In the last few decades, museums, art work and cultural heritage generally had never aroused much interest and had no social relevance until the first art collection in the 18th century. The number of audiences who have a growing sensitivity and interest in cultural heritage have risen significantly, due to the establishment of new museums, renovations of historic buildings, the proliferation of temporary exhibitions, the rise of new forms of cultural tourism, and the restoration and conservation of cultural amenities. In the face of this phenomenon, there have not been a renewal of forms in the financing and management of facilities devoted to providing more complex and varied services to the public. Also, if Italy is considered to be a model in regards to the initiatives of conservation and restoration of cultural heritage artworks, then there is an undeniable gap between Italy and many industrialized countries, in terms of marketing, communicatio, realization and management strategies....
