The course will explore Graphic Narratives as genre, covering broad themes of Fantasy, Magic Realism, and Feminism. First, we will explore the different forms that Graphic Narratives take, including books and web comics, alongside how they differ from super-hero comics and Japanese manga. During this time, we will also discuss how reading and interpreting images affects our understanding of the texts. After discussing Graphic Narratives as a genre, we will read several examples that touch on themes of Fantasy & Magical Realism, each with a unique and distinctly feminine perspective. Students will consider topics such as how Fantasy and Popular Culture influence our everyday lives, how authors portray women in this genre, and how the genre of Graphic Narratives informs our conversations and thinking about these topics. Students will be expected to write several short responses to the readings throughout the course, along with two papers of varying lengths. Possible texts may include an assortment of brief readings on related topics and core texts such as Stand Still, Stay Silent; Nimona, Coraline; In Real Life; and Anya’s Ghost. [-]

This course is built around a five-day, four-night group trip to Norway’s fascinating Arctic archipelago of Svalbard. Our primary aim is to stimulate and deepen interest in the Arctic, a region of increasingly vital importance to our world, as well as in the far north of Norway. During our time we will experience firsthand the climate of the High North, sample life in Longyearbyen, one of the world’s most northernmost towns, and expand our understanding of Svalbard’s history and status. Along the way will also learn more about its beautiful but fragile ecosystem and about the interlinking global processes of climate change. This is truly a rare opportunity that will unfold a unique place. Course requirements will include travel to and from Svalbard and participation in all planned activities, including scheduled sessions at the University Center of Svalbard (UNIS), a day-long boat excursion to the abandoned coal-mining settlement of Pyramiden, and any other common activities. Successful completion of all requirements will give one hour of course credit. These various components will be explored in the course: the geographical context; the history of Arctic exploration; the parallels with Antarctic scientific cooperation; the impact of climate change; the importance of oil and gas deposits; the shipping industry; the changing role of Arctic Council; Scandinavian interests in the area; the role of the big powers, even including China; and 21st century scenarios for this vital emergent region. This course teaches — and demands that students actively practice — the skills and conventions associated with academic reading and writing. With its emphasis on 3 to 4 complex and interdisciplinary readings a semester (readings that continue to shape current thought in the academy), the course challenges students to practice the sophisticated rhetorical skills that are commonly associated with a liberal education. Students, as they respond in writing to these readings, are given written assignments that provide practice in analysis, synthesis, and the application of critical paradigms. In service of these critical skills, students are introduced to specific writing strategies: how to give a written project focus; how to articulate a controlling idea; how to make claims, and how to develop them and support them with evidence; how to respond to and work with sources; how to cite and document sources according to MLA standards (with an understanding that other disciplines use other documentation styles); how to frame a written project, with organization and transitions, in a manner that helps readers understand.
