Physics

Possibly one of the oldest natural sciences, Physics is concerned with matter and its motion through spacetime with special attention to concepts of mechanics, light, heat and other radiation, magnetism, sound, electricity and atomic structure. Physics is a branch of fundamental science, not a practical science. The course is intended as the first plasma physics course however it is also suitable for senior undergraduate students and graduate students.

The primary objective of the course is to present and develop the fundamentals of plasma physics particularly highlighting high-temperature plasma physics and its applications to controlled fusion. The course begins with the historical overview of plasma physics and introduction of plasma phenomena. It includes classical physics background, single particle motion in electric and magnetic fields, Coulomb collisions and transport processes, electromagnetic theory, a fluid model of plasma, plasma confinement schemes, simple equilibrium and stability analysis, and principles of fusion machines.
