Best Courses in Leadership in United Kingdom 2017. Professionalism in Context - Advanced Professional Development [Level HE7] part-time This module is for professionals in the health, social care and public sectors and examines the concept of ‘professionalism’ in the context of your role within your employing organisation and wider environment. The course is based on the understanding that ‘professionalism’ is a problematic term that relates to both the competencies and standards to which you work and the purpose and values that underpin professionalism for you. Through study on the course, you will be encouraged to develop your critical perspectives on professionalism and relate this to your development within your occupational role and in the context of your organisation, service or community. You will consider notions of professionalism and explore the sources used by professionals to guide their behaviour and development. Within this, the importance of leadership is critically reviewed. In the light of ideas about what constitutes an effective professional, you will be asked to critically review your own skills and plan development that is appropriate to you and your organisation. To do this you need to understand and evaluate the impact of the immediate and wider context on your role and be able to critically evaluate and develop the role itself. This module will be taught through a series of lectures, seminars, guided learning, independent study, group discussion and reflective practice. Your learning will be based around three areas of study: Professionalism: Critiques of theories of professionalism and professionalisation; stakeholders in professionalism; the role of knowledge and values; codes and competencies; professionalism in the context of workforce development; service modernisation and the knowledge economy. The Professional: Professionalism, managerialism, leadership and effectiveness; learning as a professional: professional development, critical reflective practice, learning from theory and practice. The Wider World: Reviewing the external environment, stakeholders, relationships with other services and organisations, policy and strategic directions in the environment, inter-agency working, developing mutual understanding and joint approaches to values, principles and directions, collaboration, competition and best value. This will include a brief introduction to the history of policy and structures of your sector with the emphasis on implications for the present and potential change and will consider the different evidence bases used in health and social care, bio-medical and other paradigms. Leading Service Evaluation and Improvement - Advanced Professional Development [Level HE7] part time Current care services are driven by notions of ‘best value’ and ‘evidence-based practice’. This means service commissioners and operational managers are constantly under scrutiny to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of operational service systems. Managers are also increasingly directly accountable to users, carers and their representatives. Balancing client demands with political/organisational demands, and the supply of resources, is a significant challenge for managers in the care sector. Redesign of service systems to be ‘modern and dependable’ is seen by the government to be critical to the future of public services, hence the module is heavily (but not solely) based on systems theory. The module looks at how to assess needs and engage stakeholders in service development. It will lead you through models of service quality and criteria for reviewing and evaluating service. You will study business and professional risk, regulation and governance and tackle mapping, improving and costing service processes. Service planning, business cases and project management are also covered. The assessment for this course will be a written evaluation of a process that engages your own organisation and a plan for feasible local service development. During the course you will learn to map relevant organisational structures, policies, and key stakeholders of a service, especially the ‘user base’. This will allow you to analyse the context of your service and identify the key factors that influence its design. You will also develop the ability to critically evaluate evidence indicating the need for change and present the outcomes of your research as part of an argument for service development. For instance you will learn to use user feedback and consultation information, Trust and public health information, and evidence of unmet social or health needs. As part of the assessment for the module you will produce a critical review of the operational aspects of a real service process and develop a plan for change. This will develop your ability to analyse the effectiveness and efficiency of current (‘as is’) service processes and systems and design improved services for future implementation. Furthermore, you will learn to apply theories of implementing planned service improvement and change. By using your understanding of local organisational requirements for planning and resourcing service change, governance and risk management you will ensure that your plans meet local organisational requirements and consider any risks that may be involved. Finally, you will learn to cost the proposed improvements in your plans to ensure that appropriate budgets are set and achieved. The module will be delivered through a mix of lectures and workshop based activity, supported by distance learning and university resources. You may be given financial support from your employer or you may be self-funded. This course is part of a professional development framework within the School and the credits gained upon completion of this course can be used towards the MSc Professional Development (Leadership in Health and Social Care). Professional recognition Mapping of the learning outcomes of this course against the Knowledge and Skills Framework (KSF) and the Leadership Qualities Framework (LQF) is currently underway. Entry requirements Applicants should hold one or more of the following: a degree or equivalent; a relevant professional qualification deemed to be of an appropriate standard; or NVQ Level 4 in Management. Mid-level Managers WHY attend this programme? Today’s business environment is not easy. Priorities change frequently and you need to get results faster. But in companies and organisations, you don’t always have direct control over all the people and elements you need to deliver results efficiently and on time. We all know how stressful and frustrating it can be, trying to get everybody in a project team to deliver their parts of the project. It can also be just working with your colleagues every day, they are just too busy to help you with your project. If you could just get everybody on board and supporting your ideas, it would make life so much easier. It would also save the company time and money. But how do you do this? How do you get others to support your goals and objectives? How do you work your way through internal politics to get the collaboration and resources you need? How do you get all stakeholders on board including your peers, your team, senior management and maybe even customers and suppliers? WHO should attend? If you need to influence people or teams to get things done, then this programme is for you! HOW will you benefit? This programme is facilitated by an experienced manager who has risen up through various organizational positions in multinational organizations to hold a senior position, and has extensive experience using ethical influence to achieve outcomes. You’ll bring your own influence challenges to the programme, and your facilitator will adapt the programme to address the challenges of your group of participants. You’ll get plenty of chance to practice your influence skills through a variety of case studies, exercises and role plays, with feedback from your facilitator and your fellow participants. Module 1: You, Influence and the Managerial Context We will look at the role of influence in strategy implementation – getting things done through people over whom you have no authority – your peers whose collaboration your team needs to meet its own goals and even your superiors whose sponsorship and resource allocation you’ll need to achieve your departmental strategy. We’ll also introduce the basics of influence and you’ll learn about your own influencing style and capabilities. Through case studies, self-assessment, role play, peer discussion, and reflection you will: First, gain awareness of your own influencing style and skill level Build a deeper appreciation and understanding of the role of influence in management Get a conceptual introduction to the essentials of influence - power, politics, persuasion, and strategy implementation/goal achievement Identify your own influencing challenge with respect to implementing your strategy Module 2: Navigate your organization’s politics Like it or not, organizational politics are an integral part of daily working life. They can help or hinder you in strategy implementation. You’ll learn to map the power dynamics in your organization and how to ethically use them to support your strategy implementation. You’ll also learn ways to identify and counter people who are acting overtly or covertly to obstruct your strategy implementation. Through case studies, self-assessment, introduction to concepts, peer discussion and self-reflection, you will: Develop situational awareness and learn to read the dynamics behind organizational politics – what are people trying to achieve? Examine manipulation and influence from an ethical point of view – when is it good and when does it cross over the line? Learn typical influence tactics, and how to defend yourself against them Learn to construct an influence map as a basis for analysis and development of an influence approach Develop your own influence/political map of own strategy implementation challenge and the stakeholders involved, including your own political, power and influence position Module 3: Build networks and coalitions You can’t do it alone; you need people to help you implement your strategy. You’ll need the collaboration of your peers; this means understanding their goals and constraints in relation to yours and in relation to organizational goals, and identifying opportunities for both of you to benefit. It means mapping to their interests, gaining their respect and trust for collaboration. This is a lot easier if you have already built trust and reciprocity ahead of time by creating an informal influence network. Through practical exercises, peer discussion, and self-reflection, you will: Understand the principles behind networking, the power of an informal network, and how to leverage it for your strategy implementation. We’ll look at internal and external networks. The importance of credibility through empathy, honesty, and trust – hard to build, easy to destroy Use the influence map to determine not only what you need, but what your potential coalition partners need in order to be successful – can you help them? More work on your own influence challenge Module 4: Persuade, and win over the resistors How can you communicate with impact, and persuade, or even inspire people to join you? This takes some work on your personal style. How do you deal with difficult people, how can you win over the stubborn resistors? We will work on practical persuasion and communication through exercises and coaching. During the afternoon, there will be time for taking stock of your learning points and getting back to your personal influence challenge. Through individual exercises, reflection and coaching, you will work on: Creating presence and communicating powerfully Demonstrating credibility and authenticity through facts, emotions/values and visuals Persuasion techniques Being assertive Identifying resistance, the different types of resistors, and how to handle them Mini-course in conflict handling Putting it all together and key learning points from the programme Work on your individual influencing challenges with the support of your programme coaches.
