Learning Goal/Output By the end of this course, students have: The ability to successfully apply the learned knowledge for development of a new product/Process or business concept The ability to systematically explore and create ideas or modify existing business ideas for answering market needs The ability to systematically explore diverse obstacles in building a viable business concept based on a technology An in-depth understanding of the different phases of a business development process The ability to transform new ideas into business solutions for a commercial market environment, combined with decision-making and leadership competencies The ability to work in multidisciplinary teams The ability to present a concept to an internal audience as well as to an external panel of financiers The ability to reflect upon ethical and team processes Course Components The course will include the following components: Classroom-based lectures Team projects Team coaching Company visits Pitch Training Team pitches Short Description Business plan development in stages – (a) idea generation – (b) business concept development – (c) business plan conceptualization – (d) business plan presentation/pitch. Business concept development is facilitated by a mix between input sessions with experts, interactive discussions and coaching. In addition principles from business ethics, human resource management, social media management, IP Management, and market research are part of the curriculum and are thus incorporated into the learning process. The Summer Course starts with an introductory session, followed by an idea presentation (either in sales pitch or poster format). Based on the ideas and the team requirements presented, participants group around ideas and form teams of max. 5 people. The teams are multidisciplinary containing students from different disciplines. The summer course is mainly characterized by project work based on the stages of Business Plan creation. Project work is supported by mentors/coaches. In addition the summer course contains applied lectures from academics and practitioners. Towards the end of the course the students are trained to present their business plans. The course ends with a business plan pitch to a combined audience of internal staff (business coaches from Center for Entrepreneurship, CfE), participants and a panel of external financiers. Prerequisites The prerequisites of the TU Berlin Summer and Winter University in “Managing Innovations and Creating Innovative Business Models” are: at least one year of university experience + English level B2 or equivalent. Lecturer(s) Prof. Dr. Jan Kratzer Prof. Dr. Jan Kratzer is Chair of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management and Managing Director of Center for Entrepreneurship at Berlin Institute of Technology, Germany. In the School for Business and Economy at Berlin Institute of Technology he holds the function as Vice Dean for Research and Internationalization. In addition, he is editor of “Creativity and Innovation Management” (CIM) and in the editorial board of “Journal of Product Innovation Management”. Within the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) Jan Kratzer has held different functions in designing the educational programs of EIT. His research is mainly on factors that drive entrepreneurial activities towards success among others research on networks of entrepreneurs, entrepreneurial education, open innovation networks, social entrepreneurship, online social networks and entrepreneurial opportunities. Target group Anyone who: wants to launch a startup and has an idea already, but doesn’t know where to start; wants to know more about the dynamics of entrepreneurship in order to decide whether he/she would like to become involved in the startup scene; wants to develop his/her skills in business planning. Learning Goal/Output To be able to form a business plan; To know which steps to undertake in order to launch a business; To be aware of entrepreneurial dynamics and the startup scene structure. Course Components Lectures, case studies, interaction with real players, field trips to startup centers, writing a business plan. There will be 18 hours of class sessions per week. Short Description This course is intended to offer real knowledge of how to go about launching a startup. It will have three main parts: the structured approach, communication and real-time experimentation. The structured approach will be given through lectures and serve as a compass. Communication will come from interaction with startup scene members and on-site visits. Real-time experiment will consist of writing a business plan and scheduling the next steps. Those who develop a successful business plan may be put in contact with Berlin business incubators.
