Once a small village on the Hooghly River the settlement developed as a thriving trading post during the late 19th century and more recently it has become an industrial and commercial town that forms part of the greater Kolkata urban conurbation. In a nutshell, the place represents all the problems facing conservation of heritage and urban development in India due to rapid population growth, rising land value, poverty and lack of proper sanitation and infrastructure. The course will address the complex urban development of Serampore today and focus especially on the great challenges of regenerating the historic town through its industrial heritage.
