The CEPT Winter School course on Regeneration of a Historic Town is arranged in cooperation with The Serampore Initiative of the National Museum of Denmark, currently working together with local authorities on six years integrated program for conservation and development of shared Indo- Danish heritage in Serampore, West Bengal. Once a small village on the Hooghly River the settlement developed as a thriving trading post during the late 19th century and more recently it has become an industrial and commercial town that forms part of the greater Kolkata urban conurbation. In a nutshell, the place represents all the problems facing conservation of heritage and urban development in India due to rapid population growth, rising land value, poverty and lack of proper sanitation and infrastructure. The course will address the complex urban development of Serampore today and focus especially on the great challenges of regenerating the historic town through its industrial heritage. The participants will get a firsthand experience on a site of all phases of work relating to the conservation of built heritage, including interaction with property owners and stakeholders, preparing building survey and documentation, condition assessment, proposal for conservation and regeneration, production of booklet and presentation posters, as well as presentation of the proposals. Land art uses natural landscape as a canvas to display ‘art structure/sculpture’ rather than traditional way of displaying art in a museum or art gallery. Sculptures are not just placed in the landscape; rather, the landscape is the means of their creation. The landscape is not constant, it keeps on changing every moment, and thus land art has the momentary appreciation/drama which will eventually fade away with time and students will be encouraged to capture this momentary effect. The course gives the opportunity to learn, explore and develop a deeper understanding of nature, where students can exercise their creativity and imagination. The CEPA is produced by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific research as part of NAPO (National Admissions and Placement Office) and EMSA by the Abu Dhabi Education Council. Both the English and the Maths exams are administered in two formats: paper-based (with scanned answer sheets) and computer-based for the CEPA and computer-based only for the EMSA.
