Epidemiological research has become an important tool in assessing vaccine protection. Although there are several courses specializing in vaccinology, there remains a gap in teaching about advanced epidemiological tools for vaccine evaluation. This course fills that gap, providing in-depth training on current methods used in the evaluation of vaccine efficiency, safety, and policy. It aims to address immunization issues in high, middle, and low-income countries.

Vaccines are the most effective tool for prevention against many infectious diseases. The last two decades have been called a “golden age” in the development of vaccines. However, many of the vaccines licensed in this era have highly complex immunological, ecological, and economic effects. Effective use of these vaccines requires a new generation of public health professionals with multi-disciplinary skills to be able to understand issues around the immunological mechanism, safety, efficacy, effectiveness, population impact, effects on microbiological ecology, delivery, cost-effectiveness, and public trust of vaccines.

Causal inference is a central aim of many empirical investigations, and arguably most studies in the fields of medicine, epidemiology, and public health. However, traditionally, the role of statistics is often relegated to quantifying the extent to which chance could explain the results, whilst concerns over systematic biases due to the non-ideal nature of the data are relegated to their qualitative discussion. The field known as causal inference has changed this state of affairs, setting causal questions within a coherent framework which facilitates explicit statement of all the assumptions underlying a given analysis, in many settings developing novel, flexible analysis methods, and allowing extensive exploration of potential biases.
