Block 1: June 12th - July 6th, 2017 Course price: 1.850 Euros 18 hours of class sessions per week, 5 ECTS credit points Topic Engineering: Energy efficiency in power generation and refrigeration. Target group This is a course for students and practicing engineers, who want to gain practical insights into energy efficiency and the methods to improve it. Learning Goal/Output After completion of this course, participants will have acquired the invaluable skills needed to deeply understand energy conversion and to develop concepts for efficiency improvement, including: Creative thinking in the fields of power generation and refrigeration. Application of modern tools. Selection of sustainable solutions. Course Components The course will include the following components: Classroom-based lectures Group work projects Short Description The course will cover the following topics: power generation and refrigeration, actual status and perspectives; efficient use of primary energy sources; methods to estimate energy efficiency and methods to improve energy efficiency; sustainable energy supply. The exergy analysis, which is a modern tool of applied thermodynamics, will be presented in detail (theory and applications). Participants will have the opportunity to work in a group project: identifying the efficiency of various power generation and refrigeration systems and exploring possibilities to improve it. This topic will address new innovative scientific and practical approaches that are of interest to energy-related industries, including consulting companies. Prerequisites The general prerequisites of the TU Berlin Summer University are: at least one year of university experience + English level B2 or equivalent. Participants should have successfully completed an introductory university course in classical (applied, or engineering) thermodynamics. Lecturer(s) Prof. Dr. Tetyana Morozyuk (Institute for Energy Engineering, Faculty III) Professor Morozyuk is instated at the TU Berlin in the Institute for Energy Engineering, Faculty III. She has over twenty years of experience and related teaching experience in the fields of refrigeration and over ten years in the field of energy engineering and applied thermodynamics, particularly exergy-based methods. Her research interests include the development of energy, cost, and environmentally effective energy conversion technologies. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Georgios Tsatsaronis (Institute for Energy Engineering, Faculty III) Professor Tsatsaronis is instated at the TU Berlin, in the Institute for Energy Engineering, Faculty III. He has over forty years of experience and related educational background in the fields of; combustion technology, exergy-based methods, development, design, simulation and analysis of energy-conversion processes, optimization of the design and operation of energy systems, and power plant technology. He has been the principal investigator on research projects sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Electric Power Research Institute, the German Research Foundation, the European Union, and three German Ministries as well as other organizations, engineering companies, and electric utilities. Teaching Assistants Mrs. Stefanie Tesch is teaching assistant and PhD student of the chair “Exergy-based methods for refrigeration machines” at the Techniche Universität Berlin. She studied “Energie- und Verfahrenstechnik” at Techniche Universität Berlin, Germany, and received her Master degree in the year 2013. Her field of interest is regasification of LNG using the approach of an industrial complex. Mr. Saeed Sayadi is research associate and PhD student at the chair “Energy Engineering and protection of the Environment”. After receiving his Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering at K.N.T. University of Technology in Tehran, he worked for almost 4 years as a project engineer in the field of design and optimization of thermal power plants. He did his Master studies in Process, Energy and Environmental Systems Engineering (PEESE) at the Techniche Universität Berlin. His actual research area includes implementation of exergy-based methods in the control systems, especially for heating, cooling and air conditioning systems. [-]
