Paths to career or professional development often rely on courses for support. A course offers an in-depth look at a subject of choice and can range in duration from a few weeks of work to more lengthy commitments.

What is a course in documentary studies? A course in documentary studies will cover the various documentary mediums. Lessons often include instruction in photography, writing, audio or visual documentations such as filmmaking or interviewing, and performance. Scholars are often required to explore specific issues related to the community or individuals and chronicle their discoveries through a variety of documentation techniques. Courses might also include specifics on technical equipment, lighting, sounds, promotions, and ethics.

Those with training in documentary studies are highly organized and focused on problem-solving. Their skillset often allows them to move freely between diverse individuals and establish connections that are good for negotiating and compromise. They are commonly excellent communicators, respecting privacy and honoring commitments. These skills create exceptional employees in a wide range of disciplines.

Documentary studies is traditionally offered in brick-and-mortar institutions, with the costs of attending varying by institution. Often these studies require additional equipment, and the student might be responsible for fees to purchase or lease the necessary supplies. The school of interest will provide a list of financial requirements.

Training in documentary studies can open doors in a variety of career fields.  Many associate documentary students start with film production, but production researcher, television coordinator, film presenter, and television or video director are also possible job opportunities. Public relations liaison, marketing director, event planner or coordinator, archivist, and advertising art director provide additional employment fields for students. More skilled jobs such as camera operator or lighting and effects coordinator also fall into the category of documentary studies.

Engaging in the creative field of documentary studies is best done through a physical course offered in institutions around the world. Search for your program below and contact directly the admission office of the school of your choice by filling in the lead form.
