The Internet is full of fascinating places to find information, check out your favorite companies and stores, look for deals, read the news, and much more. However, people don’t read information on the web in the same way that they read a printed newspaper, magazine, or a book. As writers, we have to be very aware of how people approach a web page so that we can create interesting and engaging content. This one-day course is for people who write for readers on the web.
What students learn
Apply engaging techniques that draw readers to web pages

We all know what good writing is. It’s the novel we can’t put down, the poem we never forgot, and the speech that changes the way we look at the world. Good writing is the memo that gets action and the letter that says what a phone call can’t.
In business writing, the language is concrete, the point of view is clear, and the points are well expressed. Good writing is hard work, and even the best writers get discouraged. However, with practice, you can feel more confident about your own writing. This two-day workshop will give you the tools to become a better writer.

The Extended Project
As with all of the Oxford Gap Year programmes, the Creative Writing and Literature course focuses on the production of an extended piece of writing that the student must research and produce independently under the guidance of our tutors. Students on the Creative Writing and Literature Gap Year programme have the choice to write an academic thesis, such as an evaluation of a particular text or texts, or to focus on producing an extended piece of creative writing, which might be a series of poems, a novella, a collection of short stories or something else along similar lines....

Learn how to tell compelling stories across multiple platforms, like books, films, games, and TV, with this free online course.
Stories are increasingly told across a variety of formats - books, comics, events, films, games and TV programmes. This is known as transmedia storytelling or multiplatform storytelling.
This course will help you tell compelling stories across multiple platforms.
We’ll look at examples such as The Avengers, The Matrix, and Transformers - and put theory into practice, by retelling the popular fable, The Three Little Pigs, in a multiplatform format.
You’ll learn with Daniel H Byun - the film director also known as 변혁.
What topics will you cover?
Over four weeks, we’ll ask:
What is transmedia storytelling? And how does it differ from related ideas like media convergence and one source multi-use (OSMU)?
How do the key elements of character, plot, and setting create a memorable story?
What can we learn from folklore and traditional narratives?
And how is storytelling in the digital age different from previous forms?

Why join the course?
Without science writing, science could not really exist. By recording experiments and publishing the results of studies and discoveries, scientists can share their important work, and find an engaged audience. Science writing takes many forms: from press releases to video scripts. You’ll learn about different types of science writing, and look at the factors which you need to consider to write a story. You’ll discover how to gather accurate information and relevant opinions as well as tips on how to conduct a successful interview.
What topics will you cover?
Examine the different forms science writing can take, and the sources for finding out about science.
Examine the factors to consider when preparing to write your own science story, such as the angle, who your audience is, and why they will be interested in a story.
Understand how to structure a narrative.
Examine the different components you need to write for news articles, press releases, and blogs, such as the headline for a news article.
Understand the importance of balance in a news story and how to achieve it.
Explore how to use video stories to communicate scientific information to different audiences.
Explore interviewing techniques to use before and during a broadcast.
Write a news article, blog post or video script; and review and comment on the work of other learners.
What will you achieve?
Explain what science writing is and identify different types.
Identify how to source examples of science writing and evaluate them.

When we work with words we have the opportunity to explore the world with an instrument at the boundaries between reality and the imaginary. When we dream, how many dimensions do we penetrate? We evoke memories, we see images. Where do they come from? Working in the world of advertising means being able to make people dream, make people want to fly to other places, other worlds, other dimensions. Had Ariosto not imagined going to the moon, would men wish to go there? It is the poet who first imagines a dream that the world can fall in love with. Everyone has always admired the moon but Ariosto first talks about going to the moon and introduces the idea of the possibility of getting there. If he had not told of the knight who makes this fantastic journey, perhaps no one would have really wanted to undertake this mission and perhaps we would never have arrived on the moon. Here the poet creates the object of desire, the wonder of our humanity. What apparently is unrealizable, impossible, unjustifiable, all of a sudden becomes reality. In strictly biological terms, who of us was created to fly? From Icarus onwards no one was born able to fly. But does humanity fly or not? Humanity flies, and how it flies! And it also goes to the moon! Advances in science often originate in the dream and in trying to achieve it. Writing for Advertising, ie being a Copywriter, is a profession unknown to...
