Professionalism in Context - Advanced Professional Development [Level HE7] part-time This module is for professionals in the health, social care and public sectors and examines the concept of ‘professionalism’ in the context of your role within your employing organisation and wider environment. The course is based on the understanding that ‘professionalism’ is a problematic term that relates to both the competencies and standards to which you work and the purpose and values that underpin professionalism for you. Through study on the course, you will be encouraged to develop your critical perspectives on professionalism and relate this to your development within your occupational role and in the context of your organisation, service or community. You will consider notions of professionalism and explore the sources used by professionals to guide their behaviour and development. Within this, the importance of leadership is critically reviewed. In the light of ideas about what constitutes an effective professional, you will be asked to critically review your own skills and plan development that is appropriate to you and your organisation. To do this you need to understand and evaluate the impact of the immediate and wider context on your role and be able to critically evaluate and develop the role itself. This module will be taught through a series of lectures, seminars, guided learning, independent study, group discussion and reflective practice. Your learning will be based around three areas of study: Professionalism: Critiques of theories of professionalism and professionalisation; stakeholders in professionalism; the role of knowledge and values; codes and competencies; professionalism in the context of workforce development; service modernisation and the knowledge economy. The Professional: Professionalism, managerialism, leadership and effectiveness; learning as a professional: professional development, critical reflective practice, learning from theory and practice. The Wider World: Reviewing the external environment, stakeholders, relationships with other services and organisations, policy and strategic directions in the environment, inter-agency working, developing mutual understanding and joint approaches to values, principles and directions, collaboration, competition and best value. This will include a brief introduction to the history of policy and structures of your sector with the emphasis on implications for the present and potential change and will consider the different evidence bases used in health and social care, bio-medical and other paradigms. This module will be taught through a series of lectures, seminars, guided learning, independent study, group discussion and reflective practice. Professional recognition Mapping of the learning outcomes of this course against the Knowledge and Skills Framework (KSF) is currently underway. Managing Risk and Root Cause Analysis in Health Care – Advanced Professional Development (Level HE7) part-time This module is for all health and social care professionals involved with the care of individuals. Study on this course will give you the foundation to support further learning and enhance your professional development. It will enable you to demonstrate your knowledge, understanding and application of learning skills and key transferable skills and encourage you to reflect on and critically appraise your learning journey and understand the implications of learning for practice. The aim of this module is to develop your knowledge, understanding and skills in the management of risks and their root causes. You will explore the impact of safety culture and human behaviours on reducing harm to patients. This module will develop your ability to analyse critical and serious untoward incidents (SUIs) in the workplace by identifying their root causes, using a systems approach. It will improve your capacity to make management decisions regarding staff and patients involved in SUIs and critical incidents and develop your ability to diagnose the root cause of errors and develop strategies to reduce the level of harm and the likelihood of errors re- occurring. There will be participative approach to learning and encouraging personal reflection, and drawing on your experiences of errors, near misses or SUIs. Learning and teaching will involve a mixture of methods including lecture, individual and group exercises and discussion, self directed study, DVD triggers, case studies, experiential learning and activity-based learning. Associate lecturers/guest speakers may be invited to provide a perspective from their specialist sector. Your assignment will be a work based case study (equivalent to 4,000 words) that relates to a critical incident that has occurred at work. This will include a personal reflective element and a short presentation on this work related incident. What you will learn Knowledge: Building a safety culture; Promoting error reporting and effective and sensitive management of patients and staff involved in SUIs and critical incidents; Theory of human error behaviour and barrier analysis to produce effective control measures to reduce impact of harm. Risk management: General principles of risk management and governance, risk identification, probability of harm, reporting systems and risk assessment; Theory of the systems approach to root cause analysis. Tools and techniques: Root cause analysis techniques, Incident Decision Tree, grading scales, problem solving tools, barrier matrices.
