This workshop is for all those who are studying/working in the field of architecture, design, applied or visual arts. For everyone that likes to deepen his/her drawing skills, but above all seeks to acquire freedom in the use of drawing as a medium of expression, communication, research and to generate ideas! "The sudden change of the line" – the very characteristic property of the medium drawing - will be the common thread throughout the workshop. Working very basically with pencil and paper, drawing is the improvisation tool above all other. It is direct and flexible and ideally suited for visualizing ideas quickly, the starting point. The character of all lessons is that we switch between working from observation and working from imagination, between mobility and utility, content and skills. In the workshop one will work with the different concepts of reproduction, modification, converting, assembling, transformation and representation. This course will teach participants to visually record buildings, towards interpreting, critically analyzing their significance and assess their condition. Photography in Architectural Conservation will be used for research, conservation, development purposes and even production of scaled drawings. Every culture has its own story-telling tradition. Stories have the power to enrapture the audience, entertain them and sometimes even educate them. It transports them to another world, a world where their everyday troubles cease to exist, albeit for a short duration. In India, craft practices such as tholu bommalata, the shadow puppets of Andhra Pradesh, kaavad and phad, the mobile shrines and scrolls of Rajasthan, mata ni pachedi, the fabric murals of the Goddess from Gujarat, showcase this variety and richness.

This short course aims to help students depict their own stories using different styles of Indian folk art such as gond, kaavad and mata ni pachedi. The course is structured in the following manner:1) A series of discussions on the various facets of story-telling from the Indian craft perspective 2) Development of students’ own storyline based on this learning. 3)Peer review and faculty feedback to further hone the graphic novel. Over the course of nine days, the students will develop their own narrative, including character profiles and the overall setting of their story. Depending on the craft chosen, a short graphic novel of 16-24 pages will be developed. In the process of doing this, the students will also get an innate understanding of the craft process.
