Non-native English speakers may struggle with classes at the college level due to language barriers. Academic English programs are designed to help improve and build upon these students’ English skills so they are able to succeed in college courses.

Education in the United States is mainly provided by the public sector, with control and funding coming from three levels: state, local, and federal, in that order. The common requirements to study at a higher education level in United States will include your admissions essay (also known as the statement of purpose or personal statement), transcript of records, recommendation/reference letters, language tests

For many of our students at Columbia West College, the pathway to developing their talent and achieving success includes attending an American university. We also understand that while preparing for university is exciting, it’s usually a stressful time for students, too. Plus, even if you’ve taken a lot of English language courses and feel pretty comfortable in English, you may not feel confident about what to expect and what’s expected of you at a US university.

At Columbia West College, we want to reduce the stress associated with attending a US college or university by giving you the tools and skills you need to feel confident and succeed at the university level.

We accomplish this in a few different ways. First, students are given a strong foundation of academic English language skills through our ESL classes at our Los Angeles campus. Next, after developing the necessary English language skills, university-bound students are encouraged to take the Introductory or Advanced Levels (or both) of our University Preparation program. A typical university preparation program teaches students university level academic skills, but our University Preparation program is unique and goes far beyond that. We also take the time to familiarize students with American university culture and teach the out-of-classroom skills needed for success. These include time and stress management, effective classroom interaction and study skills. We do this because we know that students need more than just strong academic skills to make a successful jump to university.... [-]
