Introduction

This practical course will introduce you to a range of approaches, methods, and techniques in painting and drawing through various projects. You will be guided through drawing and painting techniques, working from observation, using materials in combination, collage and resist techniques, and responding to various objects, music, and imagination. You will be encouraged to experiment and work creatively, and you will have the opportunity to work on a personal project. Complete beginners welcome. By the end of this course, you will be able to: Use a range of drawing and painting media with a variety of tools, techniques, and surfaces. Expand, develop, and refine possibilities for your work by experimenting with a range of materials. Work from observation and imagination. Gain confidence to explore and develop ideas creatively. Use materials safely. This is a practical course, and you will spend most of your class time drawing and/or painting at home. The class uses Zoom for short lectures on artists' work and group discussions and reviews of work made during sessions. You will receive guidance on set activities and exercises, explanations, and presentations. You will have the opportunity to initiate and develop a personal project over several sessions towards the course's end. You will be encouraged to photograph works-in-progress and completed works and send images to the tutor via email for group discussions. Project briefs, materials needed, and presentations of student work will be sent to you via email. Your tutor will offer individual feedback by email, or within Zoom when appropriate, on any images of your work that you send in.
