Course of Editing & Sound

General

Program Description

We often think of cinema as a work that relates to the world of art, but behind any film production, there is a lot of technical work. Two departments that are often seen as predominantly technical are precisely the editing and sound ones. Both require good manual skills and the ability to work with hardware and software technology tools, as well as precision, patience, and thoroughness. However, those who work in these departments must also be artists.

Course characteristics

This is a two-year course with compulsory attendance, five days a week, from three to four hours per day, for a total of about 500 hours a year, and consists of three types of lesson: interdisciplinary subjects, institutional subjects, and interdisciplinary labs. The course is compulsory and students are required to work during the two-year period from Monday to Friday in one or two daily shifts and on some weekends for each two-month period, starting from the theoretical study of the concepts to get to the practice on RFA sets and on external sets during educational productions.

Course objectives and contents

The whole sense of a scene changes according to the way scenes are edited and the sounds we hear. The communicative power of a film editor is a great artist as well as technical responsibility. In RFA we not only teach the techniques and the use of the main audio and video post-production software but, above all, the cinematographic and narrative language to get to transmit the message of the script. Our students learn how to manage the direct set-up with booms, radios and professional recorders, and post-production processing of audio and video files through Final Cut, Premiere Pro, Avid, and Pro Tools. In the two-year period, artistic techniques you will study the approach to the editing and packaging of short films, trailers, teasers and showreels, working also in mixing sessions in professional studios. The practice on sets and the study of post-production make our graduates complete professionals who can enter the world of work in those two different areas of competence.

Job opportunities

The course trains the students in the following roles: editor, assistant editor, D.I.T./data manager, colorist assistant, live sound engineer, sound editor, sound designer, boom operator, and production sound mixer.

Cost and duration

The course fee is EUR 6,500.00 per year. In the first year, there is a registration fee ranging from EUR 200.00 to EUR 500.00 depending on the period in which student enrolls. These costs do not vary if the student comes from a country in the European Union or not. The course lasts two years.
