Course of Cinematography

General

Program Description

Good photography can often make a film successful, even when the narration is weak. Conversely, bad photography can ruin a good story, even if well told. It is, therefore, a role that arises, in many ways, on the same level as that of the director. Photography is a very technical department which, however, requires a strong artistic component and is, therefore, suitable for those who know how to combine these two skills.

Course characteristics

This is a two-year course with compulsory attendance, five days a week, from three to four hours per day, for a total of about 500 hours a year, and consists of three types of lesson: interdisciplinary subjects, institutional subjects, and interdisciplinary labs. The course is compulsory and students are required to work during the two-year period from Monday to Friday in one or two daily shifts and on some weekends for each two-month period, starting from the theoretical study of the concepts to get to the practice on RFA sets and on external sets during educational productions.

Course objectives and contents

Telling emotions and stories through the camera and the light is not just a technical exercise but rather the result of research, expressive sensitivity and careful study of the script with the other departments. By attending the two-year course, you learn the techniques of using the various types of cameras, from the simplest to the most structured, integrating the use of lenses and lights on the Academy's sets and in teaching locations to express the mood of a project. The course also includes the creation of increasingly complex Look books, Colour Correction modules, After Effects, Steadicam fundamentals and a great deal of practice. The Academy boasts a soundstage inside Cinecittà with vehicles and equipment dedicated to students.

Job opportunities

The course trains students in the following roles: director of photography, camera operator, first and second assistant camera, Steadicam operator, colorist, D.I.T./data manager, lamp operator, and grip.

Cost and duration

The course fee is EUR 6,500.00 per year. In the first year, there is a registration fee ranging from EUR 200.00 to EUR 500.00 depending on the period in which student enrolls. These costs do not vary if the student comes from a country in the European Union or not. The course lasts two years.
