Program Description

Overview

South and City College is a member of both the British Council and English UK. This English course for international students is for 21 hours per week for students at elementary and pre-intermediate level (IELTS 3.0 to 4.0 or CEFR A2 to B1) who want to develop their English skills for progression to General English with Academic skills or vocational courses.

Course Description

Your teachers will use a range of different teaching and learning methods to enable you to learn English and communicate in a variety of situations. To improve your speaking, you will work on your conversational skills and delivering short presentations. You will focus on the accurate use of grammar, pronunciation and broadening your vocabulary in real-life situations.

This course aims to build up all key English language skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening, and in particular to:

  • Increase your confidence in the use of English
  • Support you in gaining a wider range of vocabulary
  • Enable you to achieve greater accuracy in grammar
  • Allow you to achieve greater fluency in speaking English and improve your pronunciation

Term dates are available on the school website. Our maximum class size is 20 students though the average class size is usually much smaller. Course length is dependent on your visa but we expect students to attend a minimum of six weeks.

Class times for Elementary level students are Monday 13.45-15.45, Tuesday 13.45-15.45, Wednesday 09.15-12.15 & 13.45-15.45, Thursday 09.15-12.15 & 13.45-15.45 and Friday 09.15-12.15.

Class times for Pre-intermediate level students are Monday 09.15-12.15 & 12.45-15.45, Tuesday 09.15-12.15, Wednesday 12.45-15.45, Thursday 09.15-12.15 & 12.45-15.45 and Friday 09.15-12.15.

Students have the option to take the Cambridge Key English Test (KET). The exam fee is £100.

What areas will I study?

On this programme you will study speaking and listening in a variety of different situations. You will develop your reading skills and written communication. There is a regular grammar focus to improve your grammatical accuracy.

What are the entry requirements?

You should be over 18 years of age. Although placement is usually based on recognised UKVI IELTs scores, you will be given an assessment on arrival in the UK so that we can accurately record your starting point and map out your learning journey.

Visa requirements: Short-term Student Visa (up to 11 months)

Where can I progress to next?

Students who complete this course can progress onto an Intermediate level course or onto vocational options across the college.
