Concordia Institute of Business in Auckland.
You will be exposed to relevant learning that meets your needs. In all our levels you will work on the development of internationally recognised learning outcomes drawn from the NZQA framework and Common European Framework. This means you will be producing the language expected of a learner at your level and equally importantly you will be using language that is relevant and authentic. Your progress will be constantly monitored and assessed so that you have an objective measure of your on-going progress.
Students studying in the Starter class will learn familiar, everyday expressions and very basic phrases. Students will learn how to introduce themselves and others and how to ask and answer questions about personal information, such as:
- Where he/she lives (e.g., “Where do you live? I live in New Zealand.“)
- People he/she knows (e.g., “What’s her name? Her name is Sara. She’s my sister.“)
- Things he/she has (e.g., “Do you have a pen? No, I don’t.“)
Students finishing the Starter level will be able to communicate in a simple way with a speaking partner who talks slowly and clearly and is ready to help.
Students in the Starter class will study topics such as:
- numbers and plural nouns
- personal information
- family and friends
- sports, etc.
Students studying in the Elementary class will learn expressions related to themselves and their lives, including:
- Very basic personal and family information
- Places in town
Additionally, they will be able to communicate in a basic way about everyday situations. Students completing the Elementary level will be able to describe in simple terms aspects of his/her past, home and surroundings, and personal needs.
The range of topics covered in the Elementary class includes things like:
- Plural nouns
- Personal information and routines
- Everyday objects and activities
- Family and friends, etc.
Students studying in the Pre-Intermediate class will:
- Learn how to understand the main points of reading and listening activities on familiar and less familiar situations such as work, school, free time, etc.
- Be able to have a limited interaction with native speakers, though there may be some difficulty for both the student and the native speaker.
Additionally, the class focuses on writing, to allow students to write about a range of familiar and less-familiar subjects. Students completing the Pre-Intermediate level will be able to clearly describe experiences and events, plans and ambitions and give simple explanations for opinions and plans.
The range of topics covered in the Elementary class includes such things as:
- leisure activities
- daily routines and habits
- hobbies and interests
- dates, holidays and other special occasions
- physical and mental qualities and characteristics
- hopes and dreams, etc.
Students studying at the Intermediate level will learn how to:
- Understand the main points of reading and listening activities on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure etc.
- Be able to deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where English is spoken.
The focus on writing will allow students to produce simple connected writing on topics which are familiar or personally important/interesting. Students completing the Intermediate level will be able to describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.
The range of topics covered in the Intermediate class includes such things as
- Everyday activities
- Personal qualities and characteristics
- Society and social behavior
- Story-telling, etc.
Upper Intermediate Level
Students studying at the Upper Intermediate level will learn how to
- Understand the main ideas of complex writing and/or listening activities on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in the learner’s areas of expertise.
- Be able to interact with a degree of fluency that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without difficulty for either party.
The focus on writing will allow learners to produce clear, detailed writing on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
The range of topics covered in the Upper Intermediate class includes such things as
- past and present
- the mind
- events and celebrations, etc.
Students studying at the Advanced level will learn how to:
- Understand the main ideas of complex reading and writing activities on a wide range of topics with a high level of precision and independence.
- Be able to communicate with a degree of fluency, spontaneity and elaboration that makes interaction with native speakers possible without difficulty for either person.
The focus on writing will allow students to write a range of text types, according to audience and purpose. Additionally, students will be able to research, process and evaluate information, and writing produced will be coherent, with few errors.
The range of topics covered in the Advanced class includes such things as
- global culture
- social interaction
- mind, body and spirit
- modern lifestyles, etc.
A variety of textbooks are used, including Pearson New Total English, Oxford New Headway, and Pearson Cutting Edge. Students receive a copy of the newest edition of the textbook used, so that the topics are presented in an up-to-date, modern way.
