Certificate of Higher Education in Business and Management

This flexible course starts with you: where you are now, and where you want to be in the future. Taking a practical approach grounded in your own experience, it explores the essentials of business and management and develops the skills needed for further study. You’ll be introduced to the internal and external elements of a business, the context in which a business operates, and common aims and characteristics. You’ll also encounter work-based learning issues that are particularly relevant to your current role.

Key features of the course

  • Tailor your study according to your interests and professional needs
  • Choose a broad-based route or focus on business, leadership and management or on retail management
  • Optional modules include communication, personal finance or mathematics
  • Builds a solid foundation for further study.

Educational aims

The Certificate of Higher Education in Business and Management provides an introduction to the range of subjects and disciplines that offer analytical insight into the functioning and management of business organisations. In the first compulsory module you will focus on three essential business functions – people management, finance and accounting, and marketing and examine how they operate in a variety of organisations. In the second compulsory module you will have the opportunity to draw on your own experience and develop your skills in applying your learning. The choice of options allows you to select an area that is of interest to you such as retail, managing in the workplace, personal finance, mathematics, social sciences or communication skills.

This qualification can be used as a solid basis for study at the next level if you wish to attain a foundation degree, a diploma of higher education or an honours degree in business studies or leadership and management.

Teaching, learning and assessment methods

The key teaching vehicles are distance learning materials which comprise a range of texts as well as other materials such as audio/visual materials, and specially prepared study guides directing your study and illustrating key teaching points. How the materials are presented may vary in different modules but you should expect a mixture of online and paper. The online elements will be supported by additional web resources.

Your learning is supported by a tutor who maintains contact with you individually, conducts group tutorials and facilitates online learning for his/her group of around 20 students. The tutorials may be face to face, online or a mixture of both. Your tutor is your main point of contact, answering your queries, grading and commenting on your work and facilitating group learning.

To support the development of your group-working and communication skills, you are required to participate in tutor group online discussion forums. This also provides you with an additional environment in which to share learning and resolve module-related issues.

Assessment of the knowledge and understanding of the components of the qualification is achieved through a combination of continuous assessment and end-of-module assessment (EMA). The continuous assessment element consists of a series of tutor-marked assignments (TMAs). These are central to the teaching of the module as they enable tutors to assess and comment on your knowledge and understanding. Some modules also incorporate interactive computer-marked assignments (iCMAs). Assessment of practice-based learning in one of the compulsory modules enables you to relate module concepts to your own experience and reflect on your learning and practice.
