General

Program Description

Can you hear us? Melbourne Polytechnic can help you start a career in sound production. Certificate IV in Music Industry (Sound Production) is the best place to start developing your knowledge and skills in this exciting field.

Get a head start in the world of sound

The Certificate IV in Music Industry (Sound Production) course is very hands-on. Working in Melbourne Polytechnic’s well equipped sound studios, you will learn the principles and techniques of recording. Both campuses (Fairfield and Prahran) have industry standard Mac laboratories with all the appropriate software for budding sound producers and composers.

In this practical course you will develop your skills using live sound and basic computer music. You will do this on contemporary high-end sound equipment.

There are no specific work placements as part of the course but you will often work on related industry events and shows. Both the Yarra Edge Music Centre (Fairfield campus) and the David Williamson Theatre (Prahran campus) are large venues hosting many events throughout the year. As a sound production student, you will have many opportunities to set up stage sound and operate front of house sound.

Industry connections and resources

Your teachers actively participate in the music industry and many of them have their own studios and recording facilities.

You will be invited to work on shows and events produced by other student groups on campus, or in the related industry. You will have the opportunity to become Pro Tools Certified Operators.

Course outcomes

On completion of the course you will have developed an understanding of principles and techniques in recording, live sound, and basic computer music to further develop your own sound production interests.

Assessment

You will be assessed through

  • teacher observation
  • answering questions about tasks being performed
  • short verbal tests
  • written assignments
  • analysis of finished sound recordings
