The University of Nottingham - Faculty of Engineering

The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Innovative Metal Processing (IMPaCT) will create future leaders in metal processing and fill the industry’s gap in well-trained metals engineers.

It brings together world-class metals research teams from the universities of Nottingham, Leicester and Birmingham along with 14 industrial and international partners including GE Power, Doncasters Group, Rolls-Royce, Science and Technology Facilities Council (Rutherford Appleton Laboratory), Tata Steel, and TWI.

The Centre offers 16 fully-funded PhD studentships, each providing a four-year integrated training programme. In the first year, you will study a range of Masters level training modules and gain work experience with an industrial partner. In the next three years, you will carry out research for a PhD on a specific topic.

Throughout the studentship there will a series of student-led events, including a mini-symposia, workshops and summer schools to help you develop the skills, expertise and networks required for a fulfilling career.

Entry requirements

At least an upper-second-class honours degree, from across all engineering and science subjects.
