Introduction

The course provides aspiring entrepreneurs, company directors, managers and leaders with the chance to develop their academic understanding of the areas that affect a business, such as macro and micro-economics, politics, international relations, ethical considerations and more. These will be studied in relation to the fundamental principle of supply and demand which is at the heart of any successful business. As well as academic concepts such as those mentioned above, students will also gain an insight into the practical side of running a business, exploring the cogs and gears that make a business run including accounting, finance, marketing, human resources and research and development. Finally, the course also encourages development in wider skills essential to the successful running of a business through workshop topics such as business leadership, public speaking, critical thinking and debating.

The Project

As with all of our Oxford Gap Year programmes, the Business and Enterprise course focuses on the production of an extended piece of writing that the student must research and produce independently under the guidance of our tutors. Typically this consists of a thesis on a specific topic within Business and Enterprise, often an area of debate or something featuring heavily in the news, although there is scope for producing something other than a thesis. Possible thesis titles and topics include:

  • Global Business and Emerging Powers: The New Big Players on the World Stage
  • Ethical Considerations in the Global Village
  • From Branson to Sugar: Great Entrepreneurs and How They Rose To Power
  • Management Theory Past and Present

Other possibilities beyond the production of a thesis include:

  • A complete business plan for a proposed new business
  • An analysis of a major company and the reasons behind their successes and failures
