The Foundation Diploma in Art & Design course has 3 stages. It operates at Level 3 in the first two and then moves to Level 4 in the last stage. It prepares students to work well at degree level and studies have shown that those who undertake a Foundation course prior to university are more successful. It is a folder preparation course, recommended by top universities and is a recognised and valued route for Art & Design students in all areas. The Exploratory Stage introduces various specialist areas such as Graphics, Textiles, 3D Design, Printmaking, Fine Art and Photography. We encourage all students to try different things and to find out through practical experience what is preferred. The Pathway Stage allows you to specialise in one or two areas that you enjoy most and finally the Confirmatory Stage, develops your own ideas for a final major project, working more independently and being responsible for the structuring and production of work.
The FAD programme includes numerous trips and events which are integrated into the programme. The course is involved with live events at The New Art Gallery Walsall. Students are encouraged to make use of this relationship in their work. Private study is required and the course offers opportunities to gain further qualifications in Functional Skills English, Maths and or ICT.
