What is an Associate of Science in Architecture? This two-year program provides a well-rounded education at a community college or university. Students who choose to major in architecture select from a menu of classes such as design, urban planning, building codes, sketching and storyboarding. Most programs also offer Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) and Computer Aided Drawings (CAD). Other programs include outdoor spaces as well, such as landscape architecture and park planning.

Graduates with an Associate of Science in Architecture may choose to transfer to a university and work towards a bachelor’s degree. If already employed in the field, a higher salary might be earned upon completion.

Costs of obtaining as associate degree vary widely, but are considered a good value. Students should do thorough research on any program before committing to it in order to be sure it will meet their needs and help them achieve their goals. Generally, by enrolling in a college close to home, significant money can be saved.

Architecture is a growing field, which attracts a lot of brilliant people. As with any industry, the more education a person has, the better his or her employment options are. Once a student earns an associate degree, most of the jobs available will be at entry level, such as designing gallery spaces or other interiors. Individuals are encouraged to continue their education in order to have the best career choices.

This major provides a focused course of study for students in preparation for careers as designers of architectural projects and potential licensure as architects. Emphasis is placed on project visualization, industry-standard drawing techniques and conventions, computer-aided drafting (CAD) skills, and the specific preparation of architectural building plans. Additionally, the integral coursework includes a focus on the official code requirements necessary for residential and commercial building projects. The curriculum also includes introductory coursework in the associated fields of project engineering and construction. As a degree (in contrast to a certificate), this program requires the completion of general education courses; however, if transfer to a university for a baccalaureate or advanced degree is desired, interested students should carefully consider the specific admission and transfer requirements for individual colleges and universities. This program is not designed to fulfill the most common requirements for transfer to a university in architecture; please refer to the Associate of Science Degree in Architecture for such preparation. -
