Associate of arts (AA) degrees are academic degrees given given by community and technical colleges to students who complete two years of courses that center around a specific field of study. State and private universities generally do not award associate of arts degrees although it is common for students to earn their AA at a less expensive community or vocational college and transfer to a four-year university where they can pursue higher degrees.
