An associate degree provides students with an introduction to their chosen area of study. Available in a variety of subjects, this program typically takes two years to complete and is offered at universities and community colleges all over the world.

What is an associate degree in theatre studies? This program is designed for students interested in theatre and drama. Each program will differ in its focus, but typical topics will include the history of theatre, stage production basics, theatre technology, basics of acting and how theatre fits into the modern world. Students may also be introduced to different subject areas such as classical, modernism and postdramatic theatre. Learning methods may consist of both classroom lecture as well as stage practice.

Students who pursue this program benefit in that they develop performance skills and technical proficiencies that can help them gain employment in the entertainment industry. The program is also advantageous for those who may think that a career in theatre is of interest but are not completely sure they want to pursue it.

Students who want to pursue a theatre studies degree should research different schools and find out what the tuition and fees would be to attend. Many factors influence total cost, so it is a good idea to ask about these fees before applying for a program.

With an education in theatre studies, there are a variety of careers that graduates may choose to pursue depending on what they are interested in doing. Actors may find careers in film, professional theatre, church drama ministry or television. Some may choose to teach theatre at the primary, secondary or collegiate levels. Others may choose theatre-related careers in sales, public relations, marketing or technology. Typical job titles include producer, director, publicist, stage manager, studio technician and box office manager.
