What is an Associate Degree?

An Associate degree is a higher education degree offered at community colleges, technical schools and universities that usually takes about two years to complete. In some countries, an associate degree can be granted after a student completes the first two years of a bachelor’s degree. Some conventional types of associate degrees are Associate of Arts (AA) degrees, Associate of Science (AS) degrees and Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degrees. Associate degrees are the required higher education qualification for some professional fields, while in other sectors they provide an advantage over those without a degree.

What are the benefits of taking an Associate Degree?

There are numerous benefits of taking an associate degree program. Getting an associate degree offers a student the college experience for two years. This develops a more advanced understanding of the field of professional focus as well as helps to build character. Associate degree graduates are often more sought after than those without a higher education degree, and may also be eligible for higher pay. Employers recognize the deepened familiarity and increased understanding of the subject that comes with associate degree level study.

What do we study in an Associate Degree?

Associate degree programs are offered in a wide range of specializations across most academic disciplines. There are associate degrees in Technology, Business, the Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences and Natural Sciences. Associate degree programs are offered at schools around the world. For example, one might want to obtain an Associate Degree in Interior Decoration and Design in Australia, or an Associate of Science in legal Assisting in the USA.

What kind of career improvement can you expect with an Associate Degree?

Obtaining an associate degree can have a significantly positive impact on one’s career prospects – from competitiveness in the job search to better pay and eligibility for promotion. Companies may be more willing to consider a bid for promotion from a working professional with experience if they also have a degree. Associate degrees also open the door to continued higher education, as some degree credits may be transferrable towards a bachelor’s and on to a master’s program.

How much does it cost to take an Associate Degree?

The costs of taking an associate degree vary from one country to another and one school to another. The tuition cost may also vary depending on the subject of the associate’s degree. It is important to gather information about the cost of an associate degree program while making a choice of which associate degree is right for you. You can contact the school offering the associate degree program of choice to get more information about the tuition prices, other costs and if any financial support can be given (in the form of scholarships or aid).

Why take an Associate Degree Online?

Taking an associate degree online can open the door to higher education to those who would not be able to study otherwise, due to scheduling conflicts or location. Associate degree online programs make use of e-learning technology to bring the classroom to you in your home office or wherever you are. Working around a busy schedule can seem daunting, but online associate degree study is designed to help you realize your goals without giving up on your other commitments. Teachers can communicate directly with their students in associate degree programs online. The end result of a successful pass in an associate degree online program is the same degree full-time on campus students obtain.

The Wilderness Education program at Lake Tahoe Community College offers academic field courses across the Sierra Nevada. Our courses challenge students to learn not only from books but also from the natural landscape. Because learning and living are integrated with the field, our courses provide the opportunity for both intellectual and personal growth. We seek students with a curiosity about the natural world, a willingness to work hard, and the ability to travel and study cooperatively in an outdoor setting.

The Wilderness Education degree or certificate is designed to prepare students to become theoretically and technically competent wilderness specialists who can apply their skills as outdoor leaders to diverse groups and environments in a world with a growing population and finite wilderness resources. The curriculum provides a balanced foundation for all aspects of wilderness education/outdoor recreation. Students will gain basic competencies in outdoor-based activities, wilderness first aid skills, experiential educational theory, group dynamics, leadership theory and skills, and environmental awareness. There is an emphasis on the integration of academic work and technical field skills. The completion of the major is appropriate for students who are outdoor-oriented and who seek individual enrichment and growth.... [-]

Engineering Program

Snow College continues to offer the Associate of Pre-Engineering (APE) degree to students who plan to transfer to a university and pursue a baccalaureate degree in any of the traditional fields of engineering. This two-year degree requires an emphasis of coursework in engineering, mathematics, and physical science, with fewer general education requirements than the Associate of Science (AS) or the Associate of Arts (AA) degree. It is anticipated that a student will also earn an AS degree while at Snow College, but additional coursework will be needed to complete the balance of general education requirements for that degree.

Outcomes

Students who complete an emphasis in engineering at Snow College will be expected to demonstrate that they have a working knowledge of the theories and principles of physics in the areas of Newtonian mechanics, gravitation, electricity and magnetism, wave motion and physical optics; are acquainted with standard methods of mathematical analysis including trigonometry and analytic geometry, differential and integral calculus, matrices and linear algebra, and the solutions to differential equations; understand the role of chemistry in our physical and biological environment as it pertains to atomic and molecular structure, the laws of thermodynamics and how energy is exchanged between systems; can work effectively in a group to accomplish an objective, and make a significant contribution to its outcome; can combine the knowledge of physics and chemistry, together with the analytical skills of mathematics to find solutions to technical problems that benefit society; can use the computer to store and... The program explores accounting theory and practice, and how accounting interrelates with other important business operations such as payroll, budget, and finance. ... [+]

You have probably heard that accountants use a lot of math and have to like numbers. That is true, but accountants need to like working with people just as much as working with numbers. Accounting is like solving puzzles but you need to ask a lot of questions and do a lot of investigative work to find all of the missing pieces.

Accounting opens doors in every kind of business coast to coast. The reason accounting may be the best route to a successful business career is because accounting has always been considered as the language and basic tool of business. It has always concerned itself with determining how a business is doing and what is the bottom line. But over the last two decades, the field of accounting has been changing dramatically in response to such explosive trends as the computer revolution, increased government regulations, frequent tax law changes, the globalization of business, and the on-going downsizing and restructuring of corporations.... In a highly competitive industry, respectable qualifications and training, extensive field experience and a strong network are essential to improve your future career prospects in music. At AMPA, we provide an environment with all the above tools for you to maximise opportunities and reach your ultimate goal.

AMPA’s undergraduate music degrees are designed to comprehensively train talented musicians (performers, composers and creators) enabling them to enter the music industry one step ahead of the crowd.

AMPA undergrads can choose to focus on one of four focus areas in their degree.

Unlike many institutions in Australia, AMPA remains focused on individual, one-to-one learning. This means that music students are entitled to receive a 60-minute lesson per week as part of their Principal Study unit, along with an additional 30-minute lesson as part of the Second Study. The option of taking a Second Study is particularly unique to AMPA, and a valuable tool for students with more than one skill eg. guitar/voice or singer/songwriter.... [-]
