The Hospitality Management program at Gateway Technical College prepares graduates to be managers in the exciting hospitality industry. Whether you’re interested in hotel management, the food, and beverage industry or managing a tourist attraction, this program will give you the professional tools to advance your career. The Hospitality Management associate degree allows you to choose a path that fits your interests through the Hospitality Management degree, which focuses on the skills needed for hotel and resort management, or in one of two concentration areas: Hospitality Management with a concentration in Food and Beverage, or Hospitality Management with a concentration in Tourism and Attractions.

This two-year associate degree begins with foundation customer service and management courses common to all three concentration areas before branching into courses specific to your area of concentration. The final courses of the program address advanced management courses and topics specific to your concentration.


Learning By Doing

Students will have the opportunity to visit area business to learn from those already in the field. In class, students will have ample service and management role-playing opportunities. Internships make for a seamless transition into the workforce. Students in the Hospitality Management – Food and Beverage concentration area will also work with the Culinary Arts program on the Racine and Elkhorn campuses.


Admission Requirements

  1. Students must submit an application and pay $30 fee.
  2. Students must complete reading, writing, and math skills placement assessments.
  3. Students must submit official high school, GED, or HSED transcript.


Graduation Requirements

  1. Minimum 64 credits with an average of 2.0 or above.
  2. *Average of 2.0 (“C”) or above for these major courses.

After Graduation

Hospitality Managers in the field of hotels and lodgings hold careers including front desk supervisor, reservations manager, guest services supervisor, housekeeping supervisor, and rooms division supervisor.

Hospitality Managers in the field of food and beverage hold careers including foodservice supervisor, restaurant manager, bar manager, and foodservice lead.

Hospitality Managers in the field of tourism and attractions hold careers including supervisor or lead at an attraction, event coordinator for a hotel or a restaurant, event promoter, and festival supervisor.


Industry Certifications

Students in the Hospitality Management associate degree program will be able to apply for the following professional certifications after graduation:

  • Certified Guest Professional (Hospitality) from the American Hotel & Lodging Association
  • Certified Front Desk Representative from the American Hotel & Lodging Association
  • Certified Hospitality Supervisor from the American Hotel & Lodging Association

Students pursuing Hospitality Management with a concentration in Food and Beverage will be able to apply for the following certifications upon graduation:

  • Certified Guest Professional (Hospitality) from the American Hotel & Lodging Association
  • Wisconsin ServeSafe Alcoholic Beverage Service
  • Wisconsin Sanitation Certificate

According to the Department of Labor Statistics, in 2016, the median annual salary for a lodging manager was $51,840. For food service managers, the median was $50,820. For meeting, convention and event planners, the median salary was $47,350.
