The Associate Degree offers an ideal and inexpensive doorway for international students wanting to enter the American education system. Having worked to perfect their English language skills through the English as a Second Language (ESL) program or earned two years worth of transferable credits, many of Parkland’s international students then transfer on to 4 year universities (2+2 transfer) around the United States, where they continue their educations, earning Baccalaureate and graduate degrees.

The Communication program encompasses two areas of focus: Media Communication includes concentration areas in advertising/public relations, audio/video/Internet production, journalism/photojournalism, and media theory/research/effects. Public and Professional Communication includes concentration areas in interpersonal, public address, organizational, rhetorical studies, and cultural communication. At Parkland you will learn communication theory and develop and practice effective communication skills and/or get hands-on experience in a real radio station (WPCDFM) or in video production (PCTV), as well as opportunities for internships with local media businesses. The introductory coursework in either of these concentrations will provide a solid foundation from which you may choose any of the various pathways offered in a four-year communication program.
With an AA degree in Communication, you’ll be ready to transfer as a junior to four-year institutions, while completing an AAS degree in a media communication area prepares you for entry-level positions in your field of study. You will be prepared to work in many fields, depending upon your area of study, including advertising, public relations, media arts, photography, event planning, media relations, sales journalism, customer service representative, management; as well as technical fields such as broadcast technology. A certificate in Media Production can supplement a degree in another field and provide skills in media, computers and the arts. Bachelor’s degree programs in communication typically encompass two areas of concentration: Media Communication includes concentration areas in advertising/public relations, audio/video/Internet production, journalism/photojournalism, and media theory/research/ effects. Public and Professional Communication includes concentration areas such as interpersonal, public address, organizational communication, and rhetorical studies. The introductory coursework in either of these concentrations will provide a solid foundation from which the student may choose any of the various pathways offered in a four-year communication program. Students are encouraged to complete an associate degree prior to transfer. Students should be aware that some schools have specific requirements for admission to the major and should consult with an advisor at the transfer institution concerning specific degree requirements.
