Who Would be Interested in African/African-American Studies?

If any of the following applies to you, you should consider obtaining a minor or certificate in African/African-American (AFA) Studies:

  • Learning about the vibrant histories of African people, cultures and societies, their progress and challenges.
  • Learning about the African-American experience, achievements, triumphs, struggles and challenges.
  • Learning about issues of social justice, and working with a diverse group of students and faculty to achieve freedom of opportunity for all.
  • Developing the knowledge and skills to succeed in a multicultural workplace.
  • Pursuing careers in government, journalism, business, law, K-12 and postsecondary education, engineering, medicine, and public service.

Students have the opportunity to learn from faculty members who are not only knowledgeable and passionate about the subjects they teach, but are committed to providing opportunities for student professional growth and development.

Our faculty and staff work one-on-one with students in mentoring and serving as resources as they pursue their college careers and enter the workforce.

Mentoring and Professional Development Activities include:

  • Sponsorship for University Alternative Spring Break service activities
  • Educational trips to African-American historic and cultural centers, locally and nationally
  • Leadership development activities through the student-run AFA club
  • Professional development through participation in student-led presentations at national and regional conferences
  • Co-op/internship opportunities with diverse organizations and companies (depending on student's major)
