This course will equip you with knowledge and skills to accomplish the design, presentation and documentation process for residential and commercial building projects.

The course focuses around the idea of ‘the simulated office’ with a project based delivery structure where students apply the knowledge gained to projects as they progress through the course.

Classes mix hands-on sketching and design work with theory and building documentation drawings. Our department uses up to date computer aided programs to ensure that you are working in line with industry needs.

Career opportunities for building design professionals are extensive and include:

The right career pathway with Melbourne Polytechnic

Melbourne Polytechnic’s teachers are fully qualified and experienced to lead you through your building design studies.

This course provides you with the minimum academic requirement for registration (practical experience is also required) as a building designer in Victoria and is also an excellent stepping stone to other qualifications in fields such as architecture, project management, town planning, or interior design.

This course is recognised by the Building Designers' Association of Victoria and is recognised by the Building Practitioners' Board as the pre-requisite qualification for application to become a registered practitioner within Victoria. Graduates may seek employment as a team leader or project administrator with architects, builders or building designers and after gaining suitable industrial work experience will be capable of running their own drafting office and will be able to apply to the Building Practitioners Board to become a registered practitioner. Employment may also be sought as an architectural technician for architects, building contractors, building designers or in the building management department of large commercial enterprises or government departments.

Architecture and Construction Management (Preston, Epping)

The combined Advanced Diploma of Building Design (Architectural) and Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) will increase your employment options within the Building Design or Building Construction industries.

For no extra fees, you can also enrol in the Certificate IV and combine assessments within the projects in the Advanced Diploma.

This will allow you to work for a building designer, an architect, a builder, a building developer, or in public sector as a draftsperson, estimator or assistant quantity surveyor, assistant site supervisor or manager. Alternatively, you can pursue further studies in Architecture or Construction Management.

Architecture and Interior Design (Prahran)

The combined Advanced Diploma of Building Design (Architectural) and Certificate IV in Interior Decoration and Diploma of Interior Design and Decoration will increase your employment options within the Building Design and Interior Design industries.

For no extra fees, you can also enrol in the Certificate IV/Diploma and combine assessments within the projects in the Advanced Diploma.

This will allow you to work for a building designer, an architect, a builder, a building developer, or in public sector as a draftsperson and /or an Interior Designer. Alternatively, you can pursue further studies in Architecture or Interior Design.
