Our English for nursing course is designed to enhance communication skills and equip foreign nurses with specialist English language knowledge of the healthcare environment to enable them to work more confidently in their job. The course concentrates on all aspects of the language with extra focus on speaking and listening. The course is designed to give our students experience in day-to-day nursing activities such as patient registration, patient handover, post-operation assessment as well as an insight into the UK healthcare system. This course is available at our Archway branch either as a full time course or part time course.
The long-term course focusses on the needs of qualified nurses who are required to obtain 7.0 in an IELTS exam in all four areas tested (reading, writing, listening, speaking). The course places heavy emphasis on writing and speaking, the two areas which are most challenging to non-native speakers.
As the IELTS examinations address such general issues as education, the environment, current affairs, travel, and so on, this course reflects both health issues and some common general issues, for discussion, reading material and writing topics.
It is open to anybody with an upper-intermediate level of English or above and is aimed at people working in healthcare such as nurses, carers and administrators whose first language is not English.
The course runs from 9:00-12:15 and is currently open for registration. We currently have a special offer but places are limited.
*all courses are subject to a 10% enrolment fee with a maximum of £99.00
This is what June has to say about her course:
"My name is June. I am currently in the 5th year of medical school.
English which is not my native language and being a student who has to study in English is not easy at all, so I started to look up on the internet a school where I could take a short course to improve my English and still focus on my medical studies.
I found LMC which offers the English for nursing course. For me as a non European student I have to get a visa to come to the UK and LCM can provide all the necessary paper work for me. Katja, in the enrolment office, is really nice and was willing to help answer all my questions about the course, visa and accommodation.
My experience of the nursing course has been one of the most enjoyable classes that I ever had. Miss Georgina, our teacher is very nice and lovely lady. She did a lot of research to make sure we received all the knowledge that we needed and she also supplemented with other resources from other books.
We discussed a vast selection of topics that are medical related and trust me it was all interesting and our 3 hour classes passed by so fast!
These are just some of the topics that we covered in-depth:
Writing and reporting in accident and emergency situations.
How to use and understanding medical abbreviations.
Using idioms, polite phases and laymans terms when talking to the patients.
How to present bad news.
How to write a patient report and referral procedures.
Better understanding of medical vocabulary.
My classmates are all very experienced nurses so I learned a lot from them. Not only did I get to study I also got to know people from another countries and we shared all our medical experience.
The cost is affordable, and transportation is convenient. All essential items were located in nearby stores, and sightseeing was delightfully accessible on account of the modern transportation system.
London is one of the most beautiful historical cities so I had a chance to visit so many museums to improve my English. So I strongly recommend LCM!"
