Full Time English with Art and Design Students combine the study of General English with 5 hours per week in the School of Art and Design. The course focuses on building portfolios for entry to art based courses; many students successfully completing this course go on to study the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design at Kingston College. Having completed the Foundation Diploma, students can progress to some of the best degree courses in Art and Design in the UK Full Time English with Academic Studies/Business English The purpose of this course is to develop English for business contexts. Students work on business communication skills in spoken and written English. Business related vocabulary is a key focus and case studies are used to consolidate students’ understanding of the global business environment. Summer Language School English Language 14 hours per week course (not for students requiring a visa) Entry Requirements Students must be 16 or over. It covers a wide range of topics for those who have a specific career pathway in IT already mapped out as well as those who are not sure which specialism to follow. Many of our students progress on to HNDs or extended degree courses at excellent universities including Westminster, Birmingham and Kingston, and every year some students achieve scholarships and bursaries. They study a variety of HNDs and degrees including Business and IT, Networking and Security, although many study Computing whilst deciding on their specialism. In the second year of the course, many students also have the opportunity to transfer to the final year of the extended diploma. The BTEC course is very practical with plenty of opportunities to implement the theory that you learn. There are no external exams as it is course-work based, which, means that you have a very clear understanding of your progress throughout the course, to help you plan and achieve your next steps. Taught by subject specialists, with commercial experience, the main elements of the course cover hardware, networking, programming, graphics and web development. Course Content Blending together a mix of theoretical and practical topics in a well-resourced environment, the course covers a wide range of computing topics to allow you to experience the full breadth of the world of computing, helping you to identify areas of interest and your future specialisms. Course Content You will develop practical skills and theoretical understanding of the world of business and complete projects investigating topics such as marketing, financial analysis, website design and retail strategies. By the time you have completed the course you will have a good knowledge of the wide world of business and a practical skill set that will prepare you for the next stage in your business career. Business Studies A Level You will develop a good understanding of business issues and obtain the skills necessary to start up your own business. You will learn how individuals obtain finance to start a new business and how existing businesses respond to opportunities and threats. Studying A Level Business Studies will help you develop a range of skills such as analysis and evaluation of written and numerical data, which are skills highly valued by universities and of course by your future employer. Business Studies is a subject for students who have an interest in setting up their own business or who want to learn more about how large companies such as Microsoft operate. Course Content Four units are examined, two for the AS and two more for the full A Level. The AS content focuses on starting up and managing a business. Unit 1 concentrates on the challenges of starting a new business, especially obtaining adequate finance. Unit 2 focuses on managing an existing business, in particular planning staff levels. The emphasis in the second year is on evaluating businesses' strategies to cope with a changing world. Unit 3 deals with the strategies large businesses use in planning their finance, marketing and recruitment policies. Unit 4 concentrates on how businesses respond to changing opportunities and threats. You will broaden and develop your intellectual skills in this subject; you will learn how to analyse financial data, how to construct an argument and how to evaluate the implications of implementing different business proposals. The majority of the assessments are based on real life case studies and therefore you will be expected to read about business events in newspapers and journals and to watch business programmes such as 'The Apprentice' and 'Dragons Den'. Course Content You will examine three main texts covering prose and drama and a variety of non-literary texts from all genres. The emphasis in the first year is on exploring speech, analysing a writer’s techniques and producing your own texts in a creative way. In the second year you will study three further texts, and the emphasis will be on comparing texts and creating new texts. As part of this, you will complete independent study on two texts for a coursework assessment. You will broaden and develop your intellectual skills in this subject, learn how to communicate clearly and write fluently, and you will discuss and read a variety of texts. You will be encouraged to participate in active debate about the texts and to develop an appreciation of the skills used to create effective writing. There is one coursework unit in the second year of the course, which is 40% of the A2 marks. Film Studies is a subject that you will be able to combine effectively with any other mix of subjects.
